After checking on Rose in the infirmary, Xavier walked Rye back to her room. She had changed back into what she was wearing earlier, and her wet hair hung down her back.

“Are you excited for your birthday?” Rye tried to distract Xavier. She didn’t like to see him sulk.

To Rye’s disappointment, it wasn’t working. “I’d rather spend my time trying to break the spell.”

“But it’s your first birthday with me.” She smiled. “How old are you turning anyways?”

“I don’t know.” Xavier shrugged. “I stopped counting after 150.”

“That’s gonna be a lot of candles to blow out.” Rye whistled. “What do you want for your birthday?” She stepped in front of him and blocked his path.

Despite the anger he was feeling, Xavier smiled. “I don’t want anything.”

Rye wrinkled her nose. “You are a man who has everything after all.”

Xavier looked into her eyes. “I don’t have you.”

Rye blushed. “You do have me . . .” She reached out and placed a hand on his cheek. Xavier closed his eyes and savored her touch.

“In the future, we won’t break the curse yet . . . but we’ll still have a baby,” she said.

Xavier’s eyes snapped open. “What?”

Rye took a step closer to him. “You said you were tired of staying away from me. It’s possible . . . for us to be together.”

Xavier took a step back. “I can’t.”

“But you will.” Rye reached for him again but he stopped her.

“I couldn’t live with myself if I hurt you.”

“You won’t,” Rye said gently. “It’s possible. Can’t we at least try?”

Xavier shook his head. “It’s not possible,” he said before turning and walking away.

Rye watched him leave and disappear down the stairs. He is such a stubborn man, she thought.

Not wanting to be alone, Rye headed for Mardick’s office in search of the old man. When she reached the small office, it was empty.

Sighing, she turned to leave but jumped out of her skin in fright.

A young boy, maybe seven years of age, stood outside the office watching Rye. He was dressed in a collared shirt and sweater with navy blue pants. His dark hair was combed to one side but a single curl escaped and hung over his forehead.

“Hello,” he said as he gave a bright smile.

“Hello?” Rye said. She noticed he spoke with an American accent instead of the English accent everybody else in the palace spoke with. “Who are you?”

“My dad says I can’t say my name to strangers,” the boy said.

“O-okay, what are you doing here, kid?”

“My dad works here. I came with him.”

“Where is your dad now, and why are you not in school?”

“I’m homeschooled.” The boy shrugged. Something about him seemed very familiar; Rye couldn’t put her finger on it.

“Does your dad know you are here?” Rye asked.

“No.” The boy shook his head. “But now my mom knows I’m here, so that’s okay.”

“So you’re just walking around?” Rye asked him.

“Yes.”

“Didn’t you get lost?”

The boy laughed. “No, I grew up here, so I know the place pretty well.”

“What’s your name again?”

“I didn’t tell you.
