The weekâs suspension turns out to be a blessing in disguise. I never liked Shelton and never wanted to be there. Going was simply a steppingstone to a better life. But now, after Coraâs little sexual assault rumor has been spread, Iâm in no rush to go back there.
I spend the first day helping Mom around the house, still waiting for someone from Coraâs family or the town to arrive and let us know the threat to our home has passed.
No one does.
On the second day, I pick up some part-time shifts working landscaping for Dave Taylor working sun-up until sun-down for the rest of the week. Anything to keep my mind off her.
It doesnât work.
Every time I see a nice car drive by one of our jobs, I expect it to be her, or someone working for her family, here to threaten me again or tell me that my suspension has been extended to a permanent expulsion. Honestly, Iâm in no hurry to go back. But after everything Iâve gone through, I have to finish. Itâs what my dad would want. And Iâm no quitter. Iâm not about to let them bully me out of my diploma.
âLet me tell you what you gotta do,â Dave tells me as weâre packing up the truck. âItâs like the movies, kid. She wants you, but sheâs too afraid to tell you.â
âOh, yeah?â I donât wanna hear it, but once Dave gets going, thereâs no stopping him.
âYou gotta go over to that castle of hers, sweep her off her feet, whisper some sweet nothings in her ear, and batter dip the olâ corn dog. Know what Iâm sayinâ?â
âBatter dip the olâ corn dog?â I repeat with a chuckle.
Dave nods and takes a sip of his beer. âPut a ring on that finger and youâre sittinâ pretty, boy. Those Valmonts have more money than God. Youâd be set for life. Youâd never have to work for me again.â
âIâm not a gold-digger, Dave,â I reply. âAnd Iâm not interested.â
Dave looks at me like he almost believes me, but even Iâm not sure if I believe myself.
On my drive home, I take the long way back to the house, the one that takes me past the Valmont âcastle,â as Dave put it.
As he said, it is something out of a movie, with the purple and peach sky in the background, the evening light fading overhead, I could almost be convinced to take his advice and storm the place, rush inside, and profess my love for her.
Almost.
From the street, I can see the light of her bedroom window. Her bedroom, a wing of the house larger than the entire home my mother and I live in. The luxuries she possesses, and yet still she wants to ruin me.
Bitch.
Why hasnât she called off her dogs yet? Does she think Iâm bluffing? Thereâs no part of me that wants to expose her, tell the entire school what happened that night at the ridge, but Iâll be goddamned if Iâm going to let her take my motherâs home from her.
