The week’s suspension turns out to be a blessing in disguise. I never liked Shelton and never wanted to be there. Going was simply a steppingstone to a better life. But now, after Cora’s little sexual assault rumor has been spread, I’m in no rush to go back there.

I spend the first day helping Mom around the house, still waiting for someone from Cora’s family or the town to arrive and let us know the threat to our home has passed.

No one does.

On the second day, I pick up some part-time shifts working landscaping for Dave Taylor working sun-up until sun-down for the rest of the week. Anything to keep my mind off her.

It doesn’t work.

Every time I see a nice car drive by one of our jobs, I expect it to be her, or someone working for her family, here to threaten me again or tell me that my suspension has been extended to a permanent expulsion. Honestly, I’m in no hurry to go back. But after everything I’ve gone through, I have to finish. It’s what my dad would want. And I’m no quitter. I’m not about to let them bully me out of my diploma.

“Let me tell you what you gotta do,” Dave tells me as we’re packing up the truck. “It’s like the movies, kid. She wants you, but she’s too afraid to tell you.”

“Oh, yeah?” I don’t wanna hear it, but once Dave gets going, there’s no stopping him.

“You gotta go over to that castle of hers, sweep her off her feet, whisper some sweet nothings in her ear, and batter dip the ol’ corn dog. Know what I’m sayin’?”

“Batter dip the ol’ corn dog?” I repeat with a chuckle.

Dave nods and takes a sip of his beer. “Put a ring on that finger and you’re sittin’ pretty, boy. Those Valmonts have more money than God. You’d be set for life. You’d never have to work for me again.”

“I’m not a gold-digger, Dave,” I reply. “And I’m not interested.”

Dave looks at me like he almost believes me, but even I’m not sure if I believe myself.

On my drive home, I take the long way back to the house, the one that takes me past the Valmont “castle,” as Dave put it.

As he said, it is something out of a movie, with the purple and peach sky in the background, the evening light fading overhead, I could almost be convinced to take his advice and storm the place, rush inside, and profess my love for her.

Almost.

From the street, I can see the light of her bedroom window. Her bedroom, a wing of the house larger than the entire home my mother and I live in. The luxuries she possesses, and yet still she wants to ruin me.

Bitch.

Why hasn’t she called off her dogs yet? Does she think I’m bluffing? There’s no part of me that wants to expose her, tell the entire school what happened that night at the ridge, but I’ll be goddamned if I’m going to let her take my mother’s home from her.
