Red, Green, Gray

Across from the hotel, Trish rolled her shoulders and began stretching her neck, limbering up in small movements. Once she’d completed that, she began some mental exercises, including practicing her French as she waited. She wasn’t exactly unconcerned, but when needed, she was a patient woman.

Periodically, she resettled her crosshairs over the access door and practiced her shooting drills. Every now and then, she’d glance down to her own building’s access door, ensuring her exit was clear.

Trish thought it was unlikely anyone would come her way. She’d been as covert as possible as she set up dozens of additional drones that Sophie kept on standby at a backup location. Once those were in the air, Sophie covered her as she made her way to the roof adjacent to the hotel.

She’d gotten lucky and was able to use a shim tool from the backup site to bypass the door lock entirely while Sophie locked out the alarm system. Once through, she’d slid a security door stop into place, which would not only block it from opening but also blare out a siren.

Knowing that Shelley should be in position by now, the mercenary withdrew the tiny mantis robot from her pocket and carefully bent two metal legs, wrapping them around the support structure. She then angled its tiny solar panel toward the sun as best she could.

As she went back to practicing her French, three of Sophie's drones zipped into range, circling the building to keep a constantly moving pattern of drone signals that would collect the short-range communications.

Trish could see clusters of drones in the distance around other buildings in a similar pattern, obscuring which locations were being used. If they were tracking them, their opposition would probably assume something was up, but that was ideal for the scenario. They wanted them to investigate, after all.

Her focus returned to the little robot, and she watched in curious amazement as the metal wire that eerily resembled a bent paperclip unfurled into something that resembled an insect. Over a few seconds, it raised both front legs above its head, then lowered them to a neutral pose. It was far short of radio communications, but they had worked out a system for simple pre-determined non-verbal messages.

After another ten minutes of working on all the French names for food that she could, Trish had accidentally made herself hungry and nearly forgotten about the robot. Then motion caught her eye. Her soft green eyes snapped to her side in time to see its right front limb waved three times toward the sky, then returned to neutral.

“Got it, honey, three targets in the other building. Same three from earlier?”

The right leg waved to the right.

“Ok, same guys. Good to know,” Trish said.

The robot then swept its left leg upwards and left it there.

Trish cursed. Of all of the updates, that was the one she was hoping not to see.

“Well, ain’t that just horse shit,” Trish muttered. “Ok, so they are making their way to the roof.
