Marketing a Movement

A week later, in what was a clearly twisted sense of humor on behalf of Bridge, Alex received a travel trunk via courier. Inside was a large crystal pillar with text etched into the side that simply said, Alex Sage, Winner of this Year’s Sanity Award along with a large box of legal documents that rescinded his conservatorship. More importantly, in the mounds of additional paperwork, Alex found wire transfer instructions for two million dollars since he’d managed to keep Apollo in the news and was attributed with their stock bump.

Sophie had immediately transferred the funds. With that cleared, Alex was less upset to find the detailed auditing report that had confirmed he had been correct in his assumptions about the lawyer’s activities.

As they had suspected, his attorney had converted the entirety of his family’s life insurance and assets into Alex’s condo and furnishings. There also wasn’t a cash settlement from the accident; Alex was instead provided with medical rehabilitation costs, which he understood to a point given the costs involved. Having a truckload of money but being left broken would have been a much worse situation. They’d spent a lot more fixing him than a settlement would have cost.

There were sizable line items in the accounts that the attorney had drawn for his own pay and expenses that Alex felt like arguing but in light of his windfall, decided that it simply wasn’t worth his attention. Instead, he gave Sophie vague instructions to make the man’s life hell if given the opportunity, and with that, Alex mentally moved on to his other tasks.

By all indications, Bridge was still floating on cloud nine with all the positive stock gains he’d made. Alex allowed himself a vengeful grin when he realized that Apollo hadn’t caught on to the latest push that Alex had started the moment the judge had signed Alex’s paperwork.

Alex and his ladies had brainstormed for several days, building out a massive number of design iterations and alternative development paths that would avoid existing patents, or leverage non-Apollo licenses. In the case of other licenses, they identified critical ones they’d need to buy out from prior patent holders. Once completed, Sophie had queued up hundreds of patents designed to secure their cybernetics work, which outstripped Apollo’s current model which required internal connections to brain tissue.

Setting their trap in place, Sophie cracked into the patent system and faked all the application work under a shell company using a much earlier date than Apollo’s applications. This meant that Alex could have all of Bridge’s patents invalidated in court and force Apollo to license through Alex.

They rolled the shell company under their own business in the process. Covalent Technologies was named the parent company, and Sophie began filtering their funds and assets into the corporate protections that it offered them.

Alex had seen the napkin Aubrey brought in from the cafe and liked the circles that represented them, saying it looked like an atomic model from his intro to chemistry class. Since it represented both of his loves, he made it their new logo.
