CHAPTER 32
Beth arrived at the station earlier than usual. The big clock on the wall read seven-thirty. After dropping off her purse at her workstation, she headed to the coffee center for her morning jolt of caffeine. Several minutes later, she was back at her workstation. Silence flowed throughout the common area pleasing her. Digging deeper into Bobbi Tierney and Clarissa Morganâs past was a huge priority for her. Waking up her MacPro, she chose Clarissa first because things didnât add up. A millionaireâs wife doesnât move from a metropolitan area like Columbus, to a small community such as Oakmont without a reason. That was a big red flag, especially after her husband had passed and she inherited millions.
With her mind glued to the monitor, she was oblivious to anything in the common area. Muted chatter increased as more people arrived. She didnât mind as she was good at blocking out useless conversation. Engrossed in the information on Thaddeus and Clarissa, time moved by quickly. Hearing some disruptive commotion near her, Beth glanced in that direction seeing Bernie settling into his chair. He had this thing of finding the most comfortable position for his toosh. He was not obese by any means, however, he was useless at work until comfortable. Now, settled in, he smiled at her. Smiling back, she greeted him in her sweet way.
âGood morning to you as well. Youâre here early. Whatâs going on?â
âResearch on Clarissa, and Bobbi, I felt a little guilty yesterday. I thought Iâd get an early start, see what I could dig up about them, especially Clarissa. You know, red flags are popping up everywhere. Whereâs Carla?â
âWho knows, she drives me crazy sometimes, anyway, red flags, like what?â
âLike Bortel, it appears he worked for her husband in Columbus.â
âOkay, it could be something. What else?â
âGood morning, Bernie, Beth, whatâs going on? I heard something about Bortel. I canât believe you guys would start without me.â
âWe wouldnât do that, would we, Bernie?â
Nodding at Beth, he threw Carla his famous good morning smile followed by the look. A quick bird met his engaging eyes.
âOkay, guys, be nice to each other.â Carla threw a scowling smile at Beth. âOkay, why donât you guys get some coffee and join me in the conference room. Iâm going to refresh mine. See you in a few minutes.â
After fixing herself another cup of joe, she entered the conference room sitting at the head of the table, waiting for them. Five minutes later, they arrived with their friendly banter. It was their way of getting serious and ready for the day. Sitting across from each other, they motioned Beth to begin.
âI found some intriguing information. When I interviewed Clarissa the other day, she told me sheâd never met Bortel before. When I asked her that question, she seemed surprised by it. Anyway, I discovered that he once worked for her husband a long time ago. Thatâs how he ended up in Oakmont. Thaddeus promoted him.â
âDoesnât mean he knew Clarissa, does it, Carla?
âNo, Bernie.
