Statistically, I was playing very well, but the comparisons and expectations were crushing me. When we landed in San Francisco, my teammates’ wives or girlfriends were waiting. More than ever I longed for my wife to meet me at the airport. At that moment I would have given anything to have someone to hold me close. But I had no one. No wife. No girlfriend. I didn’t even have a home. I drove to Dick Peery’s house in Palo Alto, but I didn’t go in. I sat in my car in the driveway and called Brent Jones.

“Haley went off,” I told him. “Screaming and yelling.”

“Dude, it’s Charles. He does that all the time.”

“No, bro. This time he went crazy. You have no idea.”

Then I called Greg Madsen. The minute he heard my voice he knew I was in the depths of despair. I unloaded on him for two hours about my situation. Finally, he said, “Steve, this didn’t happen to you. Your whole life you’ve been clearing hurdles that have brought you to this place. As hard as it seems right now, you have to own this experience.”
