CHAPTER 34

Date: 17th April, 330 ASC

Position: Twenty kilometers outside the city of Helgaburg.

With a glass of iced water in hand, Ellen Telford sat and watched as the sun set over the receding valley. If she were inside the house she may have missed the landing boat’s faint whine. It had landed somewhere at the back of the house.

Drawing her Walther she ran to the edge of the garden, dropped to her knees and peered over a hedge. A spark of panic threatened to overwhelm her. A headhunter boat, with eight well-armed men, strode up the rise toward her. Backing away she stood and ran to the house. Where the hell is Saxon? He should have been back an hour ago. Fighting panic she wondered what to do. She took a deep breath.

“Don’t panic, think it through.”

Surely they would scout the house and discover that Saxon’s transport was missing. A possibility existed that they would simply give up. Or perhaps not. They could occupy the house and wait for Saxon, thinking that where he was, she was. If they discovered her she would be hard-pressed against eight of them. Ellen checked to make sure her two extra magazines were ready to use.

Knowing the horrors these animals would inflict upon her caused her to whimper.

No, stay strong, don’t give in to panic. What to do? Think. Concealment. Fight if I have to.

She locked the sturdy front and back doors. The most obvious entry point remaining would be the long bay doorways leading to the garden. Yes, they'd smash the glass to break in.

She was valuable to them, so they would use stun setting. Good. With a strained effort she pushed the small dining table onto its side and dragged it into a corner. With her back covered and the front facing the glass doors she only had to wait for them to enter the house, then she’d attack, catch them off guard. From her place of concealment to the doors was less than seven meters.

Wiping sweat from her brow, she waited, fighting to slow her fast beating heart.

Then the sound of mumbling voices reached her. She crouched down behind the table.

Thinking the house was unoccupied, one of them raised his voice.

“Hey Schwartz, there’s no transport here. The garage is empty.”

Someone peered through the bay doors.

“Looks deserted chief.”

She recognized the next voice. “You two, check the inside. See if they’ve taken their clothes with them.”

As she expected they smashed the glass to gain entry. Ellen dared a quick peek around the table. Only two of them entered. In the dim light they didn’t spot her table. After a few minutes they returned.

“Their clothes are still here, plus there’s heaps of food.”

“Right,” Schwartz said, “we’ll wait for them.”

The eight of them stepped into the room. Ellen waited.

“What’s that table doing over there?” Schwartz asked. “Check it out.”

Ellen wiped sweat from her gun hand against her pants. Sensing the man was close she held the gun in both hands and stood. The man looked startled to see her.
