Tori wasn’t feeling much better on Thursday. The illness that had overtaken her the day before wouldn’t seem to let up. Fortunately, the twins were at daycare and Rebequah was at school, so she would be able to rest for most of the day, and the work she needed to get done for their business would just have to wait—at Corey’s insistence.

After helping Corey get the three children ready in the morning, she went back to her warm bed and slept for a couple of hours. During her nap, she had another dream. This time she could see Tracy clearly mouthing the words, “It’s my fault.”

She woke up with a jolt and decided to stay in bed and pray. She needed to talk to God about her parents. It had been a while since she had brought them up in prayer. But she couldn’t stop wondering about the things she’d learned. What did it all mean? For once and for all, she wanted to get to the bottom of her parents’ deaths. Planes didn’t just crash for no reason! Did their deaths have something to do with the witches? Did it have something to do with Tracy? Anger built inside of her.

Tori had never felt as much compassion as she did for Loraine and Kia. But if she found out that Tracy was somehow involved in her parents’ deaths, she wasn’t sure she’d be able to help them anymore. Her sudden feelings of frustration gave way to guilt. What was she thinking? She was being so selfish! But she couldn’t change herself. She knew she was losing control again.

She’d felt similar to this just after giving birth to Rebequah. While growing up she’d experienced ongoing nightmares and an over-obsession with her parents, but it had come to a head when she discovered for the first time what it meant to love a daughter. She was able to imagine her own mother holding her, speaking words of love to her. It tore her apart. Where was her mother when she needed someone to help her raise her own baby? Aunt Rachel didn’t know much about babies because Tori had come to Rachel as a four-year-old.

Tori’s devastation had put a heavy strain on her marriage and on baby Rebequah for two years. Friends encouraged her to let her parents’ deaths go. Eventually, she was able to make a heartfelt decision to move on; to accept that there were no answers and her parents were simply gone. It was a real turning point. She conceived the twins about six months later and soon enjoyed being a mother of three. Then she began to pray for more purpose in her life. She’d been so preoccupied with her trauma that she suddenly felt unsure exactly who she was or what she was meant to do with her life. So she prayed for direction.

Now God was answering. He had thrown her into the thick of this mystery surrounding Kia Stewart. But the problem was that her parents were involved in the story! Her mum used to be friends with Kia’s grandmother.
