CHAPTER 14

Scarlett had to admit that Jack Harper proved excellent company. They had walked along the Promenade for a while, popping in and out of stores and generally getting to know each other a little better. Then they had sat down for a drink at one of the different eateries along the ship’s main boulevard, with Jack ordering a flat white and Scarlett sticking to her usual cappuccino. Jack had commented on her figure and said she looked like a supermodel, a compliment she had returned by saying he didn’t look too shabby himself. In fact, he reminded her of one of her favorite actors, which seemed to please Jack to no end.

“So what about your friend?” Jack asked as he took a sip from his flat white. “Didn’t she want to tag along?”

“Oh, you know what they say,” said Scarlett. “Two is company and three is a crowd. Vesta is here with her family, so I’m sure she’s having a great time by the pool right now or going to the casino or enjoying a spa special.” Which reminded her that she and Vesta had actually booked one of those spa specials, which looked really fun. But then, since she had met Jack, she figured she should probably spend time with him. How often did you meet a man like Jack Harper? Not that often!

“So Vesta is here with her family?” asked Jack.

“Yeah, her daughter and son-in-law are celebrating their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary, so the family all chipped in and got them this cruise since they’ve been wanting to go on one for ages.”

“They’re a big group, are they?”

“Um, well, there’s Vesta, her daughter Marge and Marge’s husband Tex, Vesta’s son Alec and his fiancée Charlene, granddaughter Odelia and husband Chase, their daughter Grace, so... how many is that?”

“Eight,” he said with a smile. “Not including you.”

“Oh, and four cats,” Scarlett added.

He arched an eyebrow. “Four cats?”

“Yeah, Vesta’s family is big on cats, and they didn’t want to leave them behind, so they asked the cruise line company, and they said they could bring them along, no problem. They’re very clean animals.”

“My God,” said Jack, laughing. “Imagine traveling with four cats. I think I’d go nuts.”

“Oh, but it’s fine. They’re used to it. Like I said, they’re very big on cats.”

They shared a smile, and she thought she had probably never met a more handsome man. He had the kind of distinguished gray hair that gave him personality. His beard was perfectly styled, and he also looked pretty buff, as if he worked out on a regular basis. “Can I tell you something funny?” she asked. “When we first saw you, we actually thought you were the captain. You were chatting with this woman, and we thought you were the captain, when in actual fact she was the captain, and you weren’t. I have to say, you look a lot more like a captain than she does, though.”

He smiled. “Thanks for the compliment. I’m not the captain, though, and I wouldn’t know the first thing about handling a vessel this size.
