MIDLIFE CRISES—UNCLE ED

Jamie hung out at the spot all last night, so when he came back to the house this morning, I was front and center. “What’s up?” I greeted Jamie from the sofa. Maggie had left the apartment to go to the grocery store, which meant I had Jamie all to myself. I could talk to him like I do when we’re at the spot, with no interruptions from Maggie.

“Nothing much,” he replied as he closed the front door.

“Still can’t find him, huh?” I asked him.

“Nah, and we beat the streets all last night,” he replied as he headed into the kitchen. “Where’s my mom?” he asked while he grabbed a bowl from a nearby cabinet, a box of cereal from the pantry, and the milk from the refrigerator.

“She went to the grocery store,” I told him. But I was more concerned about that dude Bullet than where Maggie was.

After Jamie filled his bowl with the cereal and milk, he walked back to the living room and took a seat on the other sofa.

“Did you see any cops hanging outside? Or undercover cars parked anywhere near our building?” I asked.

“Nah, I didn’t see ’em. And I was looking too,” he said, and then he filled his mouth with a spoonful of cereal.

“Yeah, that’s what they want us to think. But trust me, they’re out there somewhere, waiting for me to walk out of this house so they can run up on me.”

“Yeah, they might be,” Jamie said between chews.

“I just wish that we could find that dude. He’s fucking up my freedom. I don’t wanna sit in this motherfucking house all day and every day. I wanna get out there and breathe some of that good air out there. But this bitch-ass nigga is fucking shit up for me,” I expressed. The tension I was feeling on the inside was messing with my head.

“Don’t worry, Ed, we are gonna find him. I put the word out to everybody I deal with on the streets, so as soon as they see him, they already got permission to snatch him up and take him to one of our spots.”

“What kind of money you put on his head?”

“A grand.”

“Nah, put another grand on it. I think two thousand dollars will make them dudes out there know that we’re serious about getting this nigga off the streets.”

“A’ight, you know I’m on it,” he assured me, and then he changed his tone. “Yo, I’m sorry how shit went down between you and me yesterday. And I wanna say that I’m sorry for talking shit about Khloé. You’re right, she is my family and I need to treat her that way.”

“You know what, Jamie, I really appreciate you saying that. That was some grown-ass-man shit you just showed me. And I know it took a lot for you to say that too. So, I’ve got a newfound respect for you.”

“Thanks, Ed. I appreciate you saying that.”

“No problem. That’s what I’m here for,” I said. “Besides that, when you and me are getting along, it puts a smile on your mama’s face.
