Chapter 8
Motivation: Plan Your Work and Work Your Plan
Iâll purge, and leave sack, and live cleanly, as a nobleman should do.
Falstaff, in Henry IV, Part One,
WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
If only it were that simple, Falstaffâs name might never have become eponymous for gluttony, hedonism, and corpulence. Unfortunately, as anyone who has tried it knows, changing your eating behavior is tough, hard work. An enormous reality gap exists between the ease of dieting as presented in most books and magazine articles on the subject and the actual day-to-day grind of a particular diet. Whatâs advertised as a fast, easy, painless, you-wonât-be-lieve-how-quickly-your-fat-melts-away approach to weight loss and other benefits all too often becomes monotonous, restrictive, and ultimately abandoned. If it werenât so, the notorious 95 percent of people who always regain all their lost weight would still be thin.
So, how is this program different? In many ways it isnâtâalthough unlike most other programs this one has a positive health approach that actually will heal you metabolically and make it easier to work your plan. Much as weâd like to tell you otherwise, the program we have outlined still requires discipline, self-denial, and just plain old hard work. But the reward for this effort is spectacular. In the course of our work with thousands of patients we have developed many techniques to make life easier for them, but it still isnât magic. Although it âfixesâ your health problems quickly, itâs not just a quick fix. We feel itâs important to inform you in advance of the discipline required because the approach you take and the outlook you have at the beginning are of paramount importance.
The first decision you need to make is not that you need to lose weight or lower your cholesterol or reduce your high blood pressure or any or all of these. Your first decision must be to make these changes a permanent part of your life. That sounds simple, but in reality making that decision means that you are willing to abandon life (and all its dangerous goodies) as you know it today. It will be one of the best decisions youâve ever made, but we want you to understand it for what it isâa major life-altering decision. Assuming youâve made that decision, youâve got to realize and accept the fact that the responsibility for this change is yours and yours alone. You have to do the work. We have provided all the information you need to be successful, but we canât do it for you. What we can do is give you some tips and tricks that have helped us and our patients achieve our goals.
