OUCH-OUCH

Walter was forcibly escorted out of the training hall by his mentor, though the man remained furious, snorting and stomping his feet like an enraged bull. Elara remained by Finn’s side, watching Voss and the other prosecutors, who were all looking at him differently now. However, it wasn’t respect so much as fear that he saw in their eyes. They were afraid of this wild man from the streets of Metalhaven who refused to go down, no matter what they threw at him.

“Report to the infirmary for medical treatment,” Chief Prosecutor Voss said, addressing Elara rather than Finn directly. “Then I want all prosecutors in my office in thirty minutes. Dismissed!”

The prosecutors all chanted “Apex!”, though Elara merely nodded her assent. After fighting to pull Walter off him, and taking blows in the process, Finn could see that his mentor was seething with rage and struggling to choke down her anger. Voss left and the other Prosecutors dispersed soon after, chatting amongst themselves in hushed tones. Then Elara turned to him and studied his wounds, brow furrowed, though he wasn’t sure whether her concern for his wellbeing was personal or professional. Then he noticed that her lip was bleeding, likely as a result of her struggle with Walter.

“It looks like you could use some medical treatment too,” Finn said, touching a hand to Elara’s chin, close to the wound. He’d done this instinctively and his mentor drew back, as if dodging a punch.

“I’m fine, it’s you we need to get mended,” Elara replied, continuing to inspect the damage to his body. “It’s mostly superficial. I don’t think anything is broken or ruptured.”

“I’ve had worse,” Finn said, shrugging off her comments. He wasn’t trying to boast, he’d genuinely had far worse beatings at the hands of Metalhaven prefects. Then he smiled. “You should see the other guy.”

Finn’s mentor finally met his eyes and to his surprise she cracked a smile. For a moment, The Shadow had moved into the background and he was looking at Elara Cage from Metalhaven.

“Walter won’t forget that in a hurry,” Elara said, still smiling. “And neither will the other prosecutors and apprentices. They’ll treat you differently now.”

“Differently, as in better?” Finn wondered, but Elara shook her head.

“Not really, but they’ll be more careful about what they say, to your face at least,” she replied.

Finn nodded. If it meant taking less shit from Ivan and Walter then he considered that a worthwhile outcome in itself. Then he pointed to the scoreboard, which continued to display the result of his contest with Walter.

“I still lost though,” he said.

“On points, maybe,” Elara said. “But no-one expected you to last two minutes against Walter, and you fought that asshole to a stalemate, despite his supposed superiority. That’s a victory, and don’t for a second think otherwise.”

“I wish Voss would have let it go on a little longer,” Finn said, flexing his arms and shoulders, which were starting to throb and ache as the numbing effect of adrenaline wore off. “I’d have loved to put that guy on his ass at least once.
