TWENTY-SEVEN

NOW

I said goodbye to Gabe and drove a few blocks to the library to straighten things out with Hannah. When I entered, Lacey had her back to me, hanging a colorful banner that said, “Welcome to Little Library Friends Day Camp” across the wall near the entrance.

“Looks like you’re all set for those kids.”

She jumped at the sound of my voice, then relaxed when she saw me. “Camp starts in a week, so I thought I’d get a few things set up ahead of time. I hired four high school girls to be counselors, and they’re arriving in a few minutes for training. I’m not really sure what I’m going to tell them yet.”

“I’m sure you’ll figure it out.” I pointed to the banner, which tilted downward. “Do you need any help?”

“Oh, no. Thanks, but I’m good.” She tucked back her chin-length hair, but it fell forward from behind her ear. “You here to check out a book or to see Hannah?”

“The second one, unfortunately.”

Lacey laughed. “She’s in her usual room. She never stops working on cracking this supposed case.”

“Yeah. I noticed.” Lacey straightened the banner as I headed toward Meeting Room One, spotting Hannah behind the glass wall and giving a light knock. She looked up from her laptop and waved me inside.

“Did you talk to Dan?” she asked.

“Yes. That’s why I’m here. It was all a misunderstanding. Someone dropped the necklace in the lost-and-found box at his bike shop. He and Maggie take the box to Willa’s thrift store two or three times a year, and he didn’t realize the necklace was in there.”

She placed her elbow on the table, resting her chin on her knuckles. “Do you think he was telling the truth?”

“Yeah. Of course.”

Hannah’s face fell. “Shoot.” She slid her pink notebook toward her and opened it, jotting something down. “But we don’t know for sure if he’s telling the truth. The idea of Dan and Bailey secretly seeing each other makes sense, especially if he’s had her necklace all these years. We can still raise it as a theory.”

My body tensed. “First of all, there is no ‘we.’ This is your podcast. You basically blackmailed me into helping you. Secondly, you shouldn’t be accusing innocent people of things they didn’t do.”

“Not accusing, Brooke. Just raising questions.”

I felt the rage swelling inside me like a summer storm. But I remembered the technique my therapist had given me. Close my eyes and silently count to ten. Breathe in through my nose, out through my mouth. I repeated the familiar exercise.

“You okay?”

“Yes. I’m fine.” And perfectly capable of controlling my rage, despite what Hannah thought she’d uncovered about me.

Hannah continued, her voice light. “I haven’t heard back from the drama teacher yet, but once I track him down, I’ll have enough to record the next episode about Bailey’s potential secret lover. Hopefully, I’ll get it done by the end of the week.” Hannah tapped her foot, then rocked from side to side, crinkling her nose. “Sorry, but I have to pee so bad.
