CHAPTER 14

KIM

The space station orbiting Saxon’s home planet was called Dedmund. It even sounded like a stuffy professor who spent all of his time in a library studying instead of out having a good time.

Still, Kim was determined to enjoy it, as she was really the only one of the crew who’d been allowed to go onto the station. The rest were all floating in space on Eleanor since Saxon and Judit had returned.

Kim took it as a great honor that Judit would trust her with this, ignoring the fact that if she screwed up, she’d be the one left behind.

Except that Judit would come and rescue her. She was like that. Kim wasn’t sure what it said about her that she’d never even known someone like that before. She’d been on her own for so many years, without a partner, let alone a team. But the last time Kim had screwed up, Judit and the others had come for her, broken her out of that awful place.

Not that she still had the occasional nightmares about being chained to a table with a mostly-invisible monster breathing right behind her. No, not at all.

However, this time, Kim wasn’t about to screw up.

The courier that had followed them was registered to the Cartel, to one of the directors of the board, through a series of shell companies that Basil had torn through, eventually coming up with the name Clayton.

Of course, no one expected an actual member of the board to be here at this space station. However, watching whichever one of his minions who was there and getting some more information would be useful. Or at least a good first step.

According to Basil, the security on the Dedmund station was laughable. Particularly after the Balmor station.

Kim was happy that they’d be going back to Balmor. There had to be some excellent thieves there, plying their craft. She just had to sit in a public place and watch them work their lifts and placements.

In the meanwhile, she got to practice some of her own.

The single person in the courier ship was a Yu’udir, which had drawn doubt on whether or not he was actually following them or not.

However, Kim had a feeling about this, about him, about that ship with the innocent enough registry number of CP-703.

It hadn’t taken much hacking on Basil’s part to get Kim to show up as working for the Cartel as a security/customs agent. That Judit had already located where Kim could steal a uniform that would fit her on the station was impressive.

Except that Judit was like that as well, always knowing where the most logical place for supplies was likely to be.

The blue uniform was just icky. The cloth was harsh against her skin, and having to wear the same color every day? Ewww. Likely to make her suicidal. Or homicidal. Xenocidal? Something.

She sat in the workers’ cafeteria, her paperwork claiming that she’d just transferred into this tiny station despite having several years’ experience.

Seemed that she
