Kait floated through the rest of the weekend on a high she had never experienced before. She worked around the kitchen, cleaning up dinner Sunday night, while humming and reimagining each moment of her date with Hunter.

Riley walked in and asked, “Can we have dessert?”

Kait didn’t hesitate. “Sure. Anything you want.” She threw the used paper plates into the garbage and continued humming.

Ronny entered and asked, “Mom, can I have a hundred bucks?”

Kait didn’t look up. “Yes. Wait. What?” She stared at them.

Riley shoved Ronny and shook her head. “You took it too far.” Riley looked at Kait and asked, “What’s going on with you? You seem different.”

Kait shrugged. She was happy.

At about eleven, Kait fell asleep thinking about Hunter, and woke up Monday morning, the high still present—shocking, since Mondays had been known throughout history to squash even the most-annoyingly optimistic and bubbly attitudes. Kait sat in Shelly’s office, alongside Taylor, door closed.

Kait nearly lost her breath listing all of Hunter’s attributes. “He’s so amazing. So funny. We have such a great time. He soooo friggin’ sexy.” She closed her eyes. “And he kisses…”

“Do you want us to leave?” Shelly asked.

Kait opened her eyes and rolled them.

Shelly smiled and said, “We’re so happy for you.”

Kait said, “Jenn wants to meet him.”

“Dun, dun, dun,” Taylor said, with a deep voice.

Shelly said, “She’s tough, but fair. And he’s perfect anyway.”

Kait glared at Shelly. “Stay away from him. I know how to throw an axe.”

“Are you nervous?” Shelly asked.

“No. My sister will love him. What’s not to love?”

Taylor’s eyes widened. “You love him?”

Kait hesitated. “I love being with him.”

“If your sister gets to meet him, so should we,” Taylor said.

“You already have,” Kait said, laughing.

“We need quality time,” Taylor whined.

Kait smiled. “Me, too. I was thinking a backyard BBQ this weekend. Nothing crazy. I have the kids on Saturday and Sunday. Just our crew.”

“I’m in,” Taylor said.

Shelly added, “Same.”

Kait stood up. “He’s probably here by now. I’m gonna ask him before I lose my nerve. Or I wake up from this dream.”

“Good luck,” Shelly said.

Taylor laughed. “She doesn’t need luck. Just flash him a boob after you ask. One hundred percent acceptance rate.”

Kait nodded. “Should I do one or both?”

Taylor’s eyes lit up. “Both! And why am I not going to watch?”

Kait laughed and left the office. She strode down the hallway, a woman with a purpose. After the night they had together, it would be easy. But then again, was she getting too serious bringing family into the mix? She took a deep breath, rounded the corner a few steps from Hunter’s office, and stopped. Sasha’s fake giggle escaped from Hunter’s office like a punch that could pop even the strongest of spleens. Kait groaned, waiting outside his office. She wasn’t eavesdropping, but she wasn’t going to stick her fingers in her ears and hum like her kids did when they didn’t want to listen to her rules, either.

Sasha said, “I just had a great idea. There’s a new winery, Sweet Water Cellar.
