It hadn’t occurred to him that his brother wouldn’t like Allison; she had beauty, charm, intelligence and taste, among other attributes. What man wouldn’t like her? What surprised him was his nervousness about Jason’s response to Dudley. He had never discussed children with his brother and didn’t even know whether Jason wanted any of his own. He did know that he wouldn’t let Jason’s thoughts about Dudley or the fact that Allison had a child impress him.

He telephoned Allison. “Hi, sweetheart. Jason’s here and we should be at your place in about half an hour or less.”

“We’ll be ready. By the way, Dudley wants to know what you are wearing.”

He nearly laughed at that. “I’m wearing a tan suit, beige shirt and green tie.”

“Thanks. I may as well press those white pants. See you later.”

“Hey, woman, don’t I get a kiss?” She made the sound of a kiss and hung up. “Something tells me I’m in trouble,” he said to himself, raised his shoulder in a slight shrug and continued dressing.

When she opened the door, he had to suppress a whistle. What he wouldn’t have given to have been alone. He stared at her in a sleeveless, dusty-rose chiffon dress that accented her luscious figure, hair hanging around her shoulders and her lipstick-free, pouting lips tempting him to kiss her. Evidently seeing that he was at a loss for words, she reached up, kissed his cheek and stepped around him.

“Hello, Jason,” she said. “Come in. I’ve been on pins and needles ever since Brock told me I would meet you. I hope you had a pleasant drive up.”

He turned around and looked at Jason, who seemed flabbergasted. “Jason, this is Allison.”

“I know and I can see why you’ve gone bonkers. Hello, Allison. I’ve been looking forward to meeting you. Where’s Dudley?”

“Here I am. Mr. Lightner, I don’t have a tan suit and green tie, so Mommie let me wear my white suit and red tie. Is this all right?”

Brock hunkered in front of the child, who immediately hugged him. “You look perfect,” Brock said and stood. “Dudley, this is my brother, Jason Lightner.”

Dudley put out his hand. “Hi. Mr. Lightner and Jack are my best friends. Jack doesn’t go with us to restaurants. Where do you live?”

“I live in Washington, D.C.,” Jason said. “That’s a long way from here.”

“I know and I can find it on the map.” He turned to Allison. “Mommie, what can I call Mr. Lightner’s brother?” Before she could answer, he said, “I know. I’ll call him Mr. Jason.”

“That works for me,” Jason said.

With an arm around Allison’s shoulder, Brock said, “I think we’d better get started. We’re going to Wells House in Pottersville. I feel like a first-class meal.” He seated Allison, fastened Dudley’s car seat and looked at his older brother. “It isn’t often that you have a classy chauffeur like me. Try to stay awake.”

“Why should I?” Jason said. “Your eyes will be on the road and your mind will be on the woman beside you.
