CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO
Rap, rap, rap against my door, so I remove my face from the pillow. I wasn’t dreaming. Above me, standing tall and proud, are still the posts of the wonderful gothic bed, and the beautiful chandelier sparkles in the snippets of sunlight streaming in through the balcony doors. Ah, a chandelier in my temporary room. What a magical experience.
“Baily?” a voice calls through the door, and the knocking continues.
“I’m up!” I grunt, my legs get caught in the thick blankets, and I tumble to the floor.
The door opens, and Liz peers down at me, eyes shining with laughter. “Good morning.”
“Mornin’.” I grin, propping my chin in my hand. “Random gravity test complete. It’s still working as it should. You’re welcome.”
“Did I wake you?”
“Little bit.” I ease to my feet and gesture for her to come in. It is her house, after all.
“Good,” she says with cheerfulness I do not appreciate.
“Why good?”
She throws the curtains open, and I resist the urge to hiss at the sunlight daring to stream into my hideaway. “It’s a very beautiful day. You shouldn’t be wasting it by sleeping.”
“So, what do you have in mind?” I try to keep my eyes open, but the stubborn things keep trying to drift closed again.
“Have you ever been to Myrtle Beach?” There’s a happy little twinkle in her eyes.
“Yeah.” I’m awake now. My dad’s face appears in my mind, him splashing me with water as I ran through it. I think I was seven? “My d-dad used to take me all the time.”
“Great. Pack your bags and let’s go. I think it’ll be a great time for us to have a girls’ weekend.”
I gesture to my book bag in the closet. “I still haven’t unpacked.”
“Well, then, get ready.” She heads toward the door. “Dimitri should be ready by now, too.” She glances at me over her shoulder.
What’s with the mischievous gleam? “Dimitri?”
“Yes, of course,” she says like it’s obvious. “We can’t simply go out without any protection.”
Then it’ll be a girls’ weekend, with bodyguards?
“Bring your own condoms,” I murmur under my breath as she breezes out.
“What was that, dear?” She reappears in my doorway.
“Nothing!”
“Uh-huh.”
Crap balls. Busted.
