CHAPTER 25. Roundup

Michelle Montane sat in her newly assigned office, the office previously occupied by the traitor Cobb, and continued to review the information gleaned from the former guards’ officer’s computer pad. Due to the near-perfect actions of the assault team, the pad had been recovered intact and unlocked. She glanced at the time displayed on her computer. Only five minutes till the scheduled contact with Xavier Isaacson.

After taking the bait that Michelle’s team had dangled in front of him, Cobb had contacted the former ImpSec director to arrange another assassination attempt on Prince Henry. It had only been a ruse used to track down the traitor hidden in their midst. Cobb had directed Isaacson to develop a plan and report back in three days to discuss it. Montane was now going to initiate the next phase in the plan to crush the Marxist presence on Britannia.

The former guardsman had been a competent agent. He had remained hidden in plain sight, so to say, for nearly seven years. Passing high-level information to the Marxist Federation, first from the Imperial Senate and most recently from inside the palace itself. That ultimately led to his downfall. Too many recent events had taken place that resulted from information known only to select individuals. Agent Montane and her team had been assigned to find and plug the leak, which they had.

A flashing light on the pad indicated a connection request, and Michelle accepted. Because of Cobb’s precautions, using a shadowy avatar and a voice synthesizer, Isaacson had no idea who the person on this end of the transmission was. Nevertheless, she had reviewed all the previous discussions between the two, and it was time for her to become Cobb.

“Do you have a plan ready?” the synthesized voice asked.

“We do,” Isaacson replied. “But it is likely to be costly in men and equipment. You did say that you had access to additional resources, and I have a list of items that would make it less expensive.”

“There has been a change,” the shadow responded. “Undoubtedly due to the previous Princess Allison attempt. Meyerson has changed the route and made a few other minor changes. Different vehicles, staffing, etc. It will still be ground transport but will now occur at night, and in only two days.”

“That will make things more difficult, but not impossible,” Xavier stated. “Send me the new information over the encrypted link, and I will review it.”

Michelle had dangled the bait, and Isaacson had taken it all the way to the sinker. “When we finish,” the shadow responded. “Also, send me your additional assets. If I can provide them, I will provide locations for the pickup via the normal drops.” Montane needed to give the impression that everything was business as usual. “We have communicated far too much over the last month, so I need to go dark for at least a month. I will contact you via the normal method when I wish to communicate again.”

“What of this attack?” Isaacson asked.

“Handle it as before.
