Chapter 13 - Ridley

By the time they reached the Zoo, Ridley’s dislike of Kimmy was firmly entrenched. The girl never stopped talking, asking questions without waiting for the answers. She appeared to feel the need to share every thought that popped into her head, barely pausing to breathe.

Teagan didn’t seem to notice, nodding along to whatever she said with an agreeable smile. His eyes tracked her every move, watching her expressive hands and face with mute fascination.

That only strengthened Ridley’s belief that he had feelings for her and that he’d moved on from Kira at lightning speed. While she couldn’t blame him for going on with his life, she felt he could’ve waited a little longer.

Finally, they reached the gates, and she could extricate herself from Kimmy’s hold. Ric, her grandfather, waited for the Prime City group, ready to welcome them inside, and she hurried over. “Grandpa!”

“Hey, sweetheart,” Ric said, giving her a bear hug. “You’ve been scarce lately.”

“I know, and I’m sorry, but Aret’s been keeping me busy with the preparations and stuff,” Ridley said.

“Mmpf. I’ll tell her to give you some time off. Your grandmother and I miss you,” Ric said. “You’d better come visit soon.”

“It’s a deal,” Ridley said, waving at Teagan. “Look who came to visit.”

“Teagan, my boy!” Ric cried, nearly crushing Teagan’s hand in an exuberant shake.

“Sir,” Teagan acknowledged with a slight grimace of pain. Once he had his hand back, he waved at Kimmy. “This is my friend, Kimmy. She’s joining us this year.”

“Welcome to our humble abode, Kimmy,” Ric said, drawing her into a tight hug.

Kimmy giggled, color blooming high on her cheekbones as she basked in the warm energy that radiated from Ridley’s grandfather. “Thank you.”

When Ric finally let her go, she grabbed Ridley’s arm, her eyes shimmering with awe. “Your grandpa is so cool!”

Ridley shrugged, feigning nonchalance. “He’s alright if you can put up with his awful dad jokes.”

“Hey,” Ric chided, his eyes crinkling with amusement. “I’ll have you know my humor is refined and sophisticated.”

The comment earned a round of laughter from everyone present, with Callum laughing the hardest. “Tis not true. He couldna crack a proper joke if it hit him on the head.”

“The only joke around here is your awful accent,” Ric retaliated, much to everyone’s amusement. “Even after all these years, there’s no improvement.”

More laughter followed until Ric called for silence. “All right, that’s enough. Let’s get you lot settled in, or Aret will have my head.”

“Are ye still afraid of the wee lass?” Callum asked.

“Aren’t you?” Ric asked, chuckling.

“Ye have a point. Aret be a right scary proposition,” Callum agreed, and the group slowly moved off.

Once the last wagon disappeared into the distance, Teagan turned to Ridley. “How about a tour?”

“Sure, why not? Follow me,” Ridley said, glad for something to keep busy. Anything that would keep Kimmy’s focus off her and Loki. Moving fast, she led them toward the market square, weaving through the early morning traffic with practiced ease.

Bram spotted her and Loki coming and waved her over with a glad cry.
