Chapter 13

After their run-in with the quicksand, Ronan decided to call it quits for the day. It was too late to carry on, and both Seth and Rogue needed to clean up. They parked the vehicles on the nearest patch of dry land, circling the trucks for added protection from the creatures of the swamp.

In the middle, they built a bonfire and gathered enough wood to last the night. The wood was damp and created a lot of smoke, but it kept the insects at bay. While Rogue and Seth washed the gunk from their bodies and put on fresh clothes, Jessica, Bear, and Imogen prepared dinner. Ronan volunteered for the first watch, still not talking to anyone after the loss of Spook while Daniel and Lila wandered off, deep in conversation.

Clean and refreshed, Rogue chose a spot next to the fire and huddled close to the flames. The smoke stung her eyes and permeated her clothes, but she didn’t care. She was happy as long as she was warm, whole, and free from bugs.

“Here you go, love,” Seth said, passing her a plate of beans and smoked meat.

She took it with a smile of thanks, glad for the opportunity to fill her belly. The food was surprisingly good, flavored with dried herbs and tomato, courtesy of Bear’s culinary expertise. “Thank you, Bear. The food was excellent, as always.”

“My pleasure, girly,” he rumbled in reply.

“A man of few words,” Jessica said, nudging him with her shoulder.

He grinned and nudged her back, and the two shared a warm look.

It gladdened Rogue’s heart to see them so happy. It was easy to take Bear for granted. Silent and morose, he stayed in the background until his hammer was needed, but there was so much more to him than that. He was loyal, warm, loving, and a great cook. He deserves happiness. He deserves love.

Nigel sat down opposite her and eyed her with raised eyebrows. “You clean up well.”

Rogue shrugged.

“For the record, I’m glad you’re still alive.”

“So am I,” Rogue said. “And we have you to thank for it.”

“It was nothing.”

“It was more than that. Much, much more, and I owe you one,” Rogue said. “We owe you one.”

Seth nodded. “That we do.”

“What’s done is done. Forget about it,” Nigel said.

At that moment, Lila and Daniel appeared from their walk and took their places beside the fire. They whispered to each other like naughty schoolgirls, staring at the others with sly grins.

Eyeing the couple with acute dislike, Rogue decided it was bedtime. Anything was better than spending time in their company.

“Goodnight, everyone. I’m tired,” she said with a big yawn.

“Already?” Daniel asked with a smirk.

“It’s not like you’ll turn into a pumpkin at midnight,” Lila added.

Rogue rolled her eyes but didn’t reply. It wasn’t worth the hassle. “Sleep well, Jessica. Imogen. Bear.”

“I’ll come with you,” Seth said. Together, they climbed into the back of Jessica and Bear’s truck, sleeping on a bed of blankets. It was pretty comfortable and beat sleeping in the front of their old truck.
