The bar they went to had the best view in the city. From their table they could look across nearly the entire beachfront in Antalya, and the sea was beautiful and calm that evening. Eliza never tired of the view, but she took the seat with her back facing it so that Larry could have the prime spot.

“Ugh, why are there all these stray cats here?” Larry yelped after a friendly orange tabby brushed up against his legs. “Why don’t they do something about it? Go! Shoo! Get out of here, cat!”

A few heads had turned in their direction, and Eliza resisted the urge to shush Larry. Maybe he was afraid of cats…or allergic. There were plenty of reasons to react the way he had. No need for her to start correcting his behavior on his first night in the new city.

“So Larry, what would you like to drink?” Crystal asked as she opened her menu and handed one to him. “Efes is what most people drink here…I like the green one, the ‘special series,’ it’s called.”

“I guess they don’t have craft beer, do they?” Larry asked. “Or an IPA, at least?”

Eliza rolled her eyes behind her menu. “No Larry, what’s on the menu is what you have to work with. I’d recommend Efes too…I always like to try the local food and drinks when I go to a new place, rather than trying to find the things I prefer from back home. You might like it!”

When the waiter came to their table, Eliza used her basic Turkish skills to order for herself and Larry, while Crystal used hers to order some snacks for the table. Before the waiter could leave, Larry piped up. “Excuse me, do you have Wi-Fi here? What is the password?”

The waiter looked back with uncomprehending eyes.

Larry tried again, louder and slower. “WI-FI? PASS WORD? FOR ME?”

Eliza saw the color rise in Crystal’s cheeks and knew her face looked the same. Crystal swooped in and asked the waiter to excuse their friend and if there was Wi-Fi available at the bar. When the waiter shared the password with her, she took Larry’s phone from his outstretched hand and entered the password into it, not meeting his eyes. Eliza nudged Crystal’s foot under the table, raising her eyebrows when her friend made eye contact with her. Crystal shook her head and looked away.

“So Larry…” Eliza began.

“Hang on a sec,” Larry held up a finger, not looking up from his phone or ceasing his scrolling. “I’ve been offline for like a day. Can you believe they didn’t have internet on the flight?”

Eliza turned to Crystal. “Wow, how times change. Do you remember that trip we took to Mexico with your mom in middle school? Of course, we didn’t have smart phones at all, but we didn’t even have a way to make international calls without paying through the nose. I think the hotel let your mom use their computer to let my parents know we made it, but that was it.
