When Justice opened her eyes, the first thing she saw was Ethan’s face overhead.

“Ugh.” She unconsciously sighed in disgust. Why did that man have to plague her every waking thought with his annoying presence? Her shoulder hurt, and she felt weak as a kitten. A thought flashed back to her of Howie’s hands…there had been a lot of blood on them. Her own?

“Hello,” Ethan said, his tone far too cheerful.

“You…” Justice was about to insult him as best she knew how, but even speaking was difficult.

“Yes, it’s me,” Ethan returned. “Did you want to say something?” he asked.

Justice found it nearly impossible to think with him hovering over her. Truly, being the one in a vulnerable place with Ethan Fellows present to witness, was not fun at all.

Justice shook her head slowly, feeling sleepy. Her body was strangely warm, and every bit of her throbbed.

“Good, because I do,” Ethan said, shifting to sit in a chair next to her bed. “You have my apologies for the man handling yesterday,” he said.

Yesterday? She’d been out of it that long?

“Good grief,” she mumbled, still in shock over the amount of time that had lapsed without her even knowing it.

“Are you in pain?” Ethan leaned over her, interrupting her line of sight.

Anger boiling, Justice grabbed the front of his shirt and yanked down, but her plan backfired. Instead of simply getting his attention, she sent them both tumbling to the floor. Ethan cushioned her fall, but not much. The back of his head connected with the floor with a dull thud, then thanks to their momentum, Justice clocked him on the forehead with her own. Her vision swam as Ethan grunted and winced.

“I will end you,” she hissed, forearm locked against his windpipe.

“I said I was—“

“You think that’s good enough?!” she screeched, tears stinging her eyes.

Justice pressed harder, watching the lack of oxygen weaken him. Drain the life from his body, second by second.

Could she do it? There was no question. She’d killed before and could do it again. It was the should part of the equation that haunted her.

It troubled her further that Ethan wasn’t trying to stop her. If she wanted to kill him, he’d allow it. Was he so miserable?

Her hands shook.

Ethan’s eyes rolled back in his head as he lost consciousness.

With a startled cry, she reared back, rolled off him and onto the floor.

Ethan came around with a lusty gasp, rolling onto his side and consequently leaning over her. Again.

Her chest heaved with breaths coming in too fast to control. Her heart rate spiked.

Ethan stared at her for the longest while, and she didn’t return the disservice.

“Justice…” He was panting, but not because he’d nearly been strangled. “I am sorry. Truly—“

“We…are not…” The room was sweltering. She took another breath. Knew she was hyperventilating. Control. She needed control, blast it! “Friends,” she ground out.

The room was silent except for their uneven panting.

“Fair enough,” Ethan conceded, then reached for her. “Come on; I’ll help you back into—“

“Touch me, and I will finish what I started!” she rasped, darkness pulling her under.
