80 Hours Until Next Spin

Crouched in an alcove of rock on the side of a high hill, three people looked down on the dark canopy of a prehistoric forest. They had run and dodged various wildlife, living and dead, and were finally able to take a wary rest.

David propped his MRE heater next to a rock and shook his head, “We can’t have a fire.”

“But won’t it keep the animals away?” pleaded Anthoney.

“Yeah, the living ones. The dead ones don’t seem to mind the flames.”

“He’s right,” Chloe agreed. “A fire would just be a big beacon to them. We need to stay hidden until we can make our way back to the exit point.” She stared at the stone roof of the rock outcropping they were under. She shivered, even though the evening was torrid. “Although a fire would be nice.” She touched the stone, taking some of its warmth for herself.

Anthoney shivered as well, holding his arms across his chest in the heat. “We can catch it.”

Chloe and David looked at him expectantly.

“Those two soldiers were clearly dead. Dead but moving around. I didn’t put it together right away, but March talked about using whatever this is as a weapon. It was probably designed for humans. We’re human. We can catch whatever that horrible condition is.”

A bestial roar echoed through the trees. The group wasn’t exactly used to the sound, but they weren’t as terrified when they now heard these new noises as they had been. Crashing through the trees below them was something immense and it was moving quickly.

David passed the sausage and gravy MRE to Chloe, who took it eagerly.

“Careful, it’s hot.”

The three of them ate quietly, listening to the sounds of the forest around and below them. The preternatural noises of creatures extinct for millions of years was not lost on the visitors. David sat wary, Anthoney terrified, and Chloe eager to see more of the life the Cretaceous had to offer. She frowned when she realized that life might have been put in danger by humans from the future.

She sat stock still, an idea flowing through her mind. “There have been several mass extinctions throughout history. One of the most common theories for the last great extinction, which occurred at the end of the Cretaceous, is that an asteroid collided with Earth causing worldwide destruction and a nuclear winter from ash and debris thrown into our atmosphere.”

“We know that,” Anthoney confessed.

“What if it wasn’t an asteroid? What if the extinction was caused by whatever this is? What if this infects the whole planet?”

“Then wouldn’t everything be dead?” David asked. “Wouldn’t there be some evidence of this… this whatever it is in our time? How could humans have evolved if there was no life left?”

Chloe continued, “During the last extinction, seventy-six percent of all species were lost. That’s more than three quarters of all life on Earth.” She nodded, “That’s pretty substantial, but we have no evidence it was a plague. Several species of animal lived through whatever caused the extinction, maybe they aren’t susceptible to whatever this is.
