Mishap
Well, this isnât right. Itâs Friday morning, Iâve slept for thirteen hours straight, yet when I get up, I register three things I didnât expect.
One: the Lego bricks are still arranged wrongly in my stomach. Two: theyâre all mustard-colored and vomit-green, and I need to get rid of them. I try to barf them up in the bathroom. Three: even as I throw up, I want uncut celery sticks. No, I donât want them. I fucking need them.
The house is quiet. Not even Saki is up yet. A glance at my watch confirms why. Itâs six fifteen a.m. I stride to Seraphinaâs door and knock hard. She mumbles something in there. A darker pitch chimes in, and she shushes him. I roll my eyes.
âSeraphina, are you there?â As if not with all that noise.
âGive me a second. Iâm naked!â she calls.
Lots of jostling, mattress-creaking, and window-shuffling. Ultimately, thereâs ladder-climbing too. If I werenât so freaked out, Iâd have gone outside to tap a foot on the ground as Guns hurried down the side of our house. Iâd do it well-well-what-have-we-here style.
âItâs really early, Ninni,â Seraphina says, faking a yawn as she opens for me.
âI know, but this is important.â Why else would I be out of bed at this ungodly hour?
âWhat is it?â She looks behind me, worried that Iâm being accompanied by Dudes, Iâm guessing.
âDo you have a pregnancy test?â
Her eyes go so wide, I see the white on all sides of her irises.
âNo way?â
âIâm not sure,â I lie. âJust, I want to check if itâs what Iâm afraid it is.â
âAs in a baby? Whose baby. K-Popâs right?â She shakes her head like this is a dream. I wish it was. âI donât recall you with anyone else lately. Am I right?â
âYeah. Yes, youâre right.â
âDo you know what this means, Ninni?â She lets out a sigh, really rubbing in how unimpressed she is with me. Iâm with her on that.
âThat I need to use your pregnancy test?â
âI donât have any. I donât need them. Iâll go with you to Rite-Aid, though, if you want. Itâs fineâI donât need much sleep anyway.â She grimaces, undermining her statement.
âCut the crap, Seraphina. I know you have a whole stash of them in your bathroom. Iâll replace them later.â
Her cheeks take on a healthy red color. Then she opens her mouth, maybe wanting to ask if Iâve been searching her bathroom. Oh, I know everything sheâs got in thereâcall me nosy. She saves us both the question with the obvious answer and walks ahead of me into the bathroom.
âFine. So hereâs one that shows a blue line if itâs positive. This one has a pink one. This one actually says âPregnant,â which is handy. Which one do you want?â She turns her scrubbed-clean face to me, and I think it might be the first time Iâve seen Seraphina without makeup.
âWhich one works best?â
Seraphina blows up her cheeks in annoyance.
âCan I have two? Unless you plan to use any of them yourself tonight.â
âDonât be
