Twelve

Mishap

Well, this isn’t right. It’s Friday morning, I’ve slept for thirteen hours straight, yet when I get up, I register three things I didn’t expect.

One: the Lego bricks are still arranged wrongly in my stomach. Two: they’re all mustard-colored and vomit-green, and I need to get rid of them. I try to barf them up in the bathroom. Three: even as I throw up, I want uncut celery sticks. No, I don’t want them. I fucking need them.

The house is quiet. Not even Saki is up yet. A glance at my watch confirms why. It’s six fifteen a.m. I stride to Seraphina’s door and knock hard. She mumbles something in there. A darker pitch chimes in, and she shushes him. I roll my eyes.

“Seraphina, are you there?” As if not with all that noise.

“Give me a second. I’m naked!” she calls.

Lots of jostling, mattress-creaking, and window-shuffling. Ultimately, there’s ladder-climbing too. If I weren’t so freaked out, I’d have gone outside to tap a foot on the ground as Guns hurried down the side of our house. I’d do it well-well-what-have-we-here style.

“It’s really early, Ninni,” Seraphina says, faking a yawn as she opens for me.

“I know, but this is important.” Why else would I be out of bed at this ungodly hour?

“What is it?” She looks behind me, worried that I’m being accompanied by Dudes, I’m guessing.

“Do you have a pregnancy test?”

Her eyes go so wide, I see the white on all sides of her irises.

“No way?”

“I’m not sure,” I lie. “Just, I want to check if it’s what I’m afraid it is.”

“As in a baby? Whose baby. K-Pop’s right?” She shakes her head like this is a dream. I wish it was. “I don’t recall you with anyone else lately. Am I right?”

“Yeah. Yes, you’re right.”

“Do you know what this means, Ninni?” She lets out a sigh, really rubbing in how unimpressed she is with me. I’m with her on that.

“That I need to use your pregnancy test?”

“I don’t have any. I don’t need them. I’ll go with you to Rite-Aid, though, if you want. It’s fine—I don’t need much sleep anyway.” She grimaces, undermining her statement.

“Cut the crap, Seraphina. I know you have a whole stash of them in your bathroom. I’ll replace them later.”

Her cheeks take on a healthy red color. Then she opens her mouth, maybe wanting to ask if I’ve been searching her bathroom. Oh, I know everything she’s got in there—call me nosy. She saves us both the question with the obvious answer and walks ahead of me into the bathroom.

“Fine. So here’s one that shows a blue line if it’s positive. This one has a pink one. This one actually says ‘Pregnant,’ which is handy. Which one do you want?” She turns her scrubbed-clean face to me, and I think it might be the first time I’ve seen Seraphina without makeup.

“Which one works best?”

Seraphina blows up her cheeks in annoyance.

“Can I have two? Unless you plan to use any of them yourself tonight.”

“Don’t be
