CHAPTER 6
MOVING PAST THE CRAPPY STUFF
Shit happens—to everyone! You don’t deserve special treatment because you are having a bad day. People face death, being dumped, ridiculous Uber surge pricing, and bad hair days all the time. It’s how you grow from these catastrophes, big and small, that shape you into who you become.
And by the way, it only gets worse the older you get. In the past two years I’ve seen more death, illnesses, divorce, affairs, and straight-up bullshit than I’d like to recall. So far, I have been extremely fortunate to not experience anything super traumatic directly; however, I’ve been close enough to it to feel it. I am incredibly sympathetic when my friends are in pain and will do anything I can to help ease it. I’m there for them when they need me during tough times. In fact, seeing this has been great therapy. The bad stuff makes me take notice of the small and big things in my life that are easy to miss as time flies by. As I try to be here for my friends in need, in a weird, terrible way it’s very therapeutic because I see close up how bad it can be. It stops me in my tracks to make sure I am appreciating all I have.
We all have days when we can’t get out of a funk, when we just want to wallow in it, when it seems like nothing is going our way, or when everything seems out of our control. When that happens, I try to keep perspective and ask myself, is it really that bad? I remind myself that the flip side is on the horizon and I just need to get there. Until then, I try to find a happy place beyond whatever is bugging me, whether it’s closing my eyes and dreaming of a warm beach, getting ice cream with my kids, or getting on that bike at SoulCycle.
