“This is Renton Hicks, aboard the shuttle that's on course for Moon Base Delta,” he started, briefly pausing to gather his thoughts. “Also on board are Jack Stark, his research team, and the entirety of the bio-bank that they have developed. I assume I don't need to emphasize how invaluable that cargo is. Losing it would spell nothing short of a total catastrophe for the future viability of the lunar population. And any hope you might have of breaking free from Earth's extortion will die along with it, leaving you forever a slave to Earth's demands.” He paused a second time, casting a quick glance over at Selene and Yuna, both of whom now seemed to grasp his intent.

“Chancellor Adarok.” He ventured a guess that the Chancellor would be listening in. “I know that living under Earth's thumb is not the outcome you desire, so let's not jeopardize our mutual interests. Order your people to stand down and refrain from attacking this shuttle. We're on our final approach for landing. Make certain that we make it down intact, or we all stand to pay an exorbitantly high price.” With that, he closed the comms link.

By now, they were just a few short minutes away from the base. The two Xilinex shuttles had strategically positioned themselves to be directly in their flight path, creating a high-stakes game of chicken.

“So, what's the next move? What do we do now?” Yuna queried.

“Hold steady; bring it in to land as if nothing is amiss,” Renton answered, promptly opening a comms link to the base. “Matteo, can you confirm that the hangar door is fully open?”

“It's open as wide as it can possibly go. We're all standing by, ready to slam the doors shut the instant you manage to taxi inside.”

“Okay, let's all keep our fingers crossed for a smooth landing,” Renton said, feeling a rising apprehension building up in the cockpit.

For the next agonizing minute, Renton was consumed by the thought that it might very well be his last. The two Xilinex shuttles maintained their positions as their own shuttle hurtled toward them.
