NEW EARTH FOUND BY LUNAR TEAM

ARE ALIENS LIVING ON NEW EARTH?
National Enquirer
Senator Eugene McMasters sat at his desk in red-faced fury.
âSo what do we do about this?â he demanded of the trio sitting in front of the desk, facing him.
His chief of staff shrugged minimally. Harold Newby was a gray-haired veteran of Washington politics, calm in the worst of storms. âNot much we can do, Chief. The news mediaâs nuts about the story.â
âBut is it true? Not something Tomlinsonâs people have cooked up?â
His public relations director shook her carefully coiffed head. âThe Astronomical Association released the story,â Mavis Johnstone said softly, gently. âThey wouldnât do that if it wasnât true.â
The third person facing McMasters was Oscar Edelman, the senatorâs science advisor, a rail-thin man with lank, dirty-blond hair. He nodded his agreement. âTheyâve found a planet thatâs very similar to Earth. Whether itâs populated or not is not known.â
âHow soon before that is known?â McMasters demanded.
Edelman shrugged his frail shoulders. âTheyâre programming several radio telescopes to listen for possible radio transmissions. And thereâs talk of sending one or more unmanned spacecraft to study the planet close-up.â
McMasters seemed to vent steam.
Edelman explained quickly, âItâll take fifty years for a spacecraft to reach Sirius. Possibly more.â
âSo we wonât know if thereâs people on that planet or not for at least fifty years,â the senator growled.
âNot unless the radio telescopes pick up something.â
âIf they donât, that means the planetâs dead?â
âNosir. It just means that if thereâs intelligent life on the planet, it hasnât reached the level where itâs developed radio technology.â
âAnd we wonât know that for fifty years, at least.â
Squirming uncomfortably, Edelman replied. âUnless we pick up some radio signals.â
McMasters glared at him.
Edelman stopped squirming and pulled himself up straighter in his chair. âThereâs something pretty doggone odd about this so-called New Earth,â he said.
âOdd?â
âIt shouldnât be there.â
Leaning forward in his sizeable desk chair, McMasters demanded, âWhat the hell do you mean by that?â
âSirius B is a white dwarf star,â Edelman began to explain, like a teacher drumming facts into a slow pupil. âAges ago it was a normal star, but it collapsed and exploded. Like a supernova.â
âA super what?â McMasters demanded.
Ignoring the senatorâs question, Edelman went on, âThe starâs explosion wouldâve probably destroyed any planets orbiting around it. Or at least scoured them clean, boiled off their atmospheres and oceans.â
âSo?â
âSo hereâs this planet orbiting Sirius B. With an oxygen-rich atmosphere and large bodies of liquid water. By all we understand of stellar dynamics, it shouldnât be there. It canât be there.â
âBut there it is,â said Charlene Martinson, in a near whisper.
Edelman nodded. âThere it is,â he echoed.
Senator McMasters was not impressed. âSo your highbrow theories are all wrong. The planet is sitting there, you canât deny it.â
âNo,â Edelman replied, his voice a little shaky. âI canât deny it.â
And the third man sitting before the senatorâs desk, Newby, quoted, âAnother beautiful theoretical bubble burst on the sharp edge of an observed fact.â
