Dina was in the local grocery store, she needed food and she wasn’t sure if she were being followed. For the first day, she’d laid in her bed, afraid to leave the apartment. She’d not heard from Alexei and she was just as happy she didn’t. She’d also not gone into work, nor had she received a call from them. She was in a limbo. She picked up several boxes of porridge, two packs of sausage, a carton of eggs, cheese, smoked fish and some chocolates. She had a sweet tooth, and she laughed. Wasn’t that her excuse for leaving the apartment?

Someone bumped into her, the aisle was narrow. They kept walking and she thought nothing of it. Going to the register, she was checked out and her groceries put into her cloth bags. She left the store, deep in though. She just didn’t know what to do. She wished she could see Gregg, her heart hurt with the thought of all those lost years. He’d apparently gone under deep cover. Those bastards had led her to believe he’d been killed.

What would her life have been like had she not been dragged into the service of the now destroyed United States? She was torn, between her long-lost love for Gregg and the life she could have lived as a normal Russian citizen. She got home and put her groceries away. Putting her hands in her pockets, she felt something in there. She turned and went into the bathroom.

She sat on the toilet and pulled the folded paper from her pocket. Inside the folded paper was a tiny plastic bag. It had two small tablets. She shivered. She’d seen it before. It was cyanide. She hoped her bathroom didn’t have a camera. She felt a hot flush at the thought of it. Opening it she read it twice.

Dina, I’m sorry you were dragged into this. You are being watched. Your apartment is bugged. There is a small camera in the living room, in the vent. Borin is nearly convinced you are innocent. He plans to contact you in a few days. He will ask you to return to work. You must return. But, give him a hard time. Pout and cry and make him feel guilty. I need you in there. We are trying to end the weapons program. You’ll know when the time is right, give Borin these two pills. Then, make your way to the blue safehouse. We’ll get you out. We’ll need any info you can glean. Same reporting procedure. Be careful. Will be in contact. G.

She put the tiny bag with the pills under her sink, in a corner. It would not be found unless someone were trying hard to find it. She flicked her lighter to the note and the paper vanished into white ash. She flushed the toilet, glad that there were no cameras there. She walked into the living room conscious of the hidden camera. She went to the small kitchen and made her some dinner.
