During the early to mid-1400s the Convento’s importance continued under the stewardship of Henry the Navigator. A driving force behind Portugal’s Age of Discovery, Henry had a rectangular nave built onto the circular chapel. On its own the nave might have been quite impressive, but compared to the adjoining chapel the interior of the nave is almost boringly plain. However it is the exterior of the nave that commands attention. Completed during the reign of King Manuel I in the early 1500s, the ornate exterior stonework is a stellar example of Manueline style. The nave features the famous chapter house window by architect Diogo de Arruda.
