Finally, on the last day of the week, Hiru earned his first day off. When he woke up that morning to the sunlight peering through the window, he felt like he could breathe again. Lady Alderine would not be ordering him around today. None of the maids, butlers, or others would be asking him for random favors. The baron had given explicit warnings on interrupting either Mr. Hiru or Ms. Enrie on their days off.
He jumped out of bed and ran out of the butlersâ quarters where he had slept.
But what should I do?
He stopped in his tracks for a moment. He was much too far from the village to pay a visit. He wanted to see Yaegar, Alina, Krita, Kino and his friends, but until he had a reliable means of transportation, that was a pipe dream.
All he knew was he wanted to go out and get some fresh air.
He went out into the hall. The staff seemed in a big rush this morning. Sebas was using his outdoor voice to carry orders from across the room. And everyone seemed to be on edge. Some of the staff had brought a few wooden ladders and others were climbing it to hang decorations in front of the second floor balcony at the stairs edge.
âMr. Hiru,â Sebas said. âGood morning.â
âGood morning, Mr. Sebas. Is something happening?â
âOh nothing you need to be concerned with on your day off. Though You seem to be in a hurry yourself. Will you be skipping breakfast this morning?â
Hiruâs stomach grumbled. There was no way he was missing out on the best part of working for nobility. He went off to the banquet hall and had a delicious breakfast casserole made with poached eggs, meats, herbs, and potatoes. While he was eating, the door opened and Enrie entered, taking the seat next to him. She tried to load up her empty plate with food, but the maids insisted on doing it for her.
âYum!â she said with glossy eyes.
âGood morning, Enrie.â
âOh! Good morning, Mr. Hiru. Isnât it wonderful to finally have a day off?â
âItâs yours, too?â
âYes, and Iâm going out. Say, youâre not from Shirule, are you?â
He shook his head.
âIn that case, would you like me to show you around for a bit? We havenât gotten much of a chance to talk, and since weâre both bodyguards, itâd be nice to bond a little, donât you think?â
âOkay. Iâll come with you.â
She grinned. âGreat, but first donât you want to change? Itâs your day off. You shouldnât wear your uniform all the time.â
Hiru felt a little ashamed of his rag clothing. People in Shirule, especially the baronâs staff, had given him weird looks with it on. He wanted to wear something else, but he had given Yaegar his five silver coins, so he was penniless until his first paycheck came.
I guess I canât afford a weapon, either. But I could still look.
âI think Iâll just wear this. Oh, and do you think we could shop for a weapon?â
Hiru scarfed his food down, so he politely waited for Enrie to finish swallowing a huge bite of food.
