Chapter 17

The sun had sank down hours before she made her trip. She covered herself in black clothing that she had found in one drawer and set about her way. Tools and some food were in her backpack, just in case she got cornered for a while. The path was clear so she walked, and walked and walked. After about an hour she saw the first signs of life, orc life.

Two large orcs were walking down the road. They looked to be patrolling in their thick hide tunics and heavy swords that looked more like clubs. Their darkened skin nearly mixed with the background, and they didn't seem to need light.

Cassandra laid under her cloak in the ditch as they passed. Her heart pound in her ears so loud she was scared they would notice. She could barely breathe as she watched from under the dark fabric as their feet came so close, but did not pause. She laid there until they were out of sight before letting a breathe out. So close, but it was just the beginning. She scrambled to her feet and continued on, this time she kept to the ditch with her head low. The road continued onward, winding a bit. It was just as she remembered it, but it would continue onto the forest so she bet there was going to be a side road coming up.

As she got closer she saw a tall wooden wall rising up over the wheat. Her heart sank as she realized they fortified themselves. Their walls were rough and uneven with spikes at the top. Not that the spikes mattered, it was too high for her to climb. The only entrance she saw as she came around carefully was the front entrance Two large orcs sat by the gate. Clearly they were not expecting company as the gate was left open. That didn’t mean it was going to be easy to get in. She paused and considered her options.

The orcs were sleepy, but their bickering seemed to keep them awake. Their voices were in some strange elvish language that sounded like grunts and snorts. Their eyes kept looking at each other with annoyance. She stayed in the ditch and waited. What was she going to do?

“Illusion,” a voice whispered in her ear, “make yourself disappear.”

Magic, she kept forgetting she had that particular skill. With a deep silent breathe she closed her eyes and concentrated. Once she recited the spell in her mind she opened her eyes and looked around. There was no way for her to tell if the spell had worked. She could only pray it did.

Another orc came out of the gate and started to yell at the two that were there. The gate was big enough for several orcs to come and go. By the look of the dirt wagons came through regularly. They seemed intent upon arguing with themselves so she slipped closer and paused. They did not seem to spy her, but their argument was finishing fast.
