Ruby Sangria

I‘ve become infatuated with apothecary-style beverage urns fitted with spigots, since they are especially beautiful for presenting fruited drinks. Sangria is the ultimate example. Not only can you see the bounty of fruit flavoring the wine mixture inside, but you also can tap into the drink’s full flavor without having wimped-out fruit floating around in your glass. Serving kebobs of extra fruit lets you enjoy both the drink and the fruit at their finest.

ONE 750-MILLILITER BOTTLE RED WINE

½ CUP BRANDY

½ CUP ORANGE-FLAVORED LIQUEUR

½ CUP FRESH ORANGE JUICE

¼ CUP SUGAR

2 CUPS ORANGE WEDGES

2 CUPS RED APPLE WEDGES

2 CUPS GREEN APPLE WEDGES

2 CUPS GRAPES

ONE 750-MILLILITER BOTTLE SPARKLING WATER, CHILLED

GARNISH: GRAPES AND ORANGE WEDGES, RED AND GREEN APPLE WEDGES (ABOUT 1 CUP EACH) THREADED ON SMALL WOODEN SKEWERS (OPTIONAL)

Combine the red wine, brandy, liqueur, orange juice, and sugar in a large pitcher or plastic container; stir well. Add the oranges, red and green apples, and grapes. Chill for several hours.

Just before serving, add the sparkling water.

Pour the sangria into red-wine goblets or cocktail glasses filled with ice. Garnish with fruit kabobs, if desired.
