Chapter 21

“We’ve got multiple traps set up along the branch pathway, but they appear to have been triggered already. Orders?”

That’s… odd. Regardless, that doesn’t change what we need to do.

Wendalt softly answered Pectro, who had come back from a brief look at the dungeon. “Nothing’s different, but be on the lookout for additional traps. Take us across the traps, and let’s get this done.”

There were no other words as Hart and Pectro turned back to the tree and began their ascent up the stairway. The Arcane Archer had lost track of how many dungeons he had participated in destroying over the years, typically near the border where they caused the most problems, but he suspected that this one was going to be much different. It had been a long time since he’d been on a full sweep, where the dungeons sometimes grew dangerously large with strong monsters, but he still knew the feeling when walking up one. Unfortunately, it felt exactly the same as it did now.

We’re ready for this. We have to be.

It wasn’t long before they were traveling over the branch, and he saw the obvious spots along the surface where a trap had been activated. From what he could tell, they were some of the poison gas traps that could be lethal or debilitating for most Defenders under Level 20, but were more annoying than anything harmful for those of a higher Level – such as every single scout with him. Besides, they had plenty of healing or ways to neutralize any poisons they encountered, so he wasn’t too worried about the gas.

What was worrying was how many traps he saw along the length of the branch. Typically, they might see a handful of traps throughout an entire dungeon, spread out to catch people unaware; here on this branch, however, he counted more than a dozen. If what he had witnessed outside hadn’t been enough of an indication that this dungeon was wildly different and unique, then the sight of so many traps certainly was. Glancing at his scouts, he could see that they were also a bit disturbed by how many traps were present.

Hart and Pectro stopped outside of the room at the end of the branch, before cautiously looking inside. They stared for a few seconds before entering without another word, indicating to everyone else that what they were facing wasn’t that strong. He wanted to call out and warn them not to take the dangers at face value, because this dungeon was different, but they had already disappeared to the left and right inside the entrance. A few seconds later, Wendalt was accompanied by the rest of his scouts as they entered the room… only to be greeted by a score of mushrooms.

He knew what they were, of course, but he had expected something more dangerous. A quick look around the relatively empty room showed that there didn’t seem to be any hidden dangers, either traps or monsters, which he had trouble understanding. It
