Chapter 24

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4TH, IN SUSSEX

“Ready?”

Lydia shook her head. “No. But I need to be. Here we are.” The train was slowing. As soon as it stopped, Galen got the carriage door open and hopped down, offering Lydia a hand. He glanced down the train to see Willet, his valet, wrangling the luggage. There were three suitcases and a hatbox, though to be fair, one of the suitcases was mostly the costumes for the ball.

“Someone is supposed to be meeting us.”

As they came around the corner of the station, they spotted Bunny in his memorable motor car. This time, however, the roof was fully up. “Your man can ride with you, Galen, or wait for the next run, your choice.”

“With me, please, I’d rather he be able to see to the unpacking. Willet?”

Willet was settling the luggage onto a rack at the back, and nodded. “Moment, sir.”

Galen had come to a comfortable enough detente. Willet had been second footman under his parents, and a promotion to valet was quite a coup. Willet disapproved of the lack of suitable occasions to show off his skill. This, though, this was the first house party he was attending entirely because of Galen, and the first as a proper valet. He’d certainly been around for others, though, and Galen was hoping he’d gather some useful information from the servants’ hall. Once he slid into the back seat of the auto, Galen joined him, letting Bunny make sure Lydia was comfortable. They took off at good speed, though not quite as much as in Newmarket.

It was not exactly a long drive, perhaps twenty minutes, but that meant it was quite a fair distance from the train. Galen was suddenly very glad there was a portal somewhat nearer, just across the estate at Monk’s Gate. Quite an old one, he gathered, pre-dating the Pact. The house, when they pulled up the drive, fit the rambling and lengthy floor plan. It was pale brown and beige stone, but he could see several Edwardian repairs.

The house had, he gathered from his and Lydia’s research, belonged to Felicity’s side of the family, an aunt or grandmother or something of the kind. Lydia said nothing, but when they piled out of the automobile, she took his arm and leaned in while Bunny was making sure the luggage was unloaded without scratching the paint. “Rather large.”

“I’m glad we said we’d be in together.” Galen still wasn’t sure how that was going to go, but he was sure he’d rather know where she was, and be able to write Willet if he needed to.

As they came up to the front steps, now trailing Bunny, there was Felicity. “Oh, goodness, right on time.” The way she said it, it was as if they’d been slightly rude. “Though, I suppose if the train was running on time, the way Bunny drives, I shouldn’t be surprised. Come in, come in. I suppose you want to freshen up. The trains are always all over soot.” She
