Hannah was sitting at the kitchen table having a cup of coffee the next morning when Ben walked in. She looked up and gave a slight frown when she saw him. Even though his handsome features always exuded a professional manner, this morning he looked tired.
âBen,â she said. âI didnât hear you come in.â
âMaria let me in. I just wanted to see how you and Faith were doing this morning.â
Hannah rose, walked over to the cupboard and pulled out a cup. âSit down and have a cup of coffee with me. You look like you could use it.â
He didnât respond but dropped into the chair and rubbed his hands over his eyes. âI didnât sleep well last night. I kept seeing those pictures of Faith.â
She set the coffee in front of him, sat down and picked up her cup. She knew what he meant. Every time sheâd tried to shut her eyes last night it seemed that she saw either an arrow aimed at her back or Faith bouncing a ball on the playground. âI know.â She wondered if he could hear the fear in her voice.
He looked up from stirring his coffee and stared into her eyes. Sheâd often thought that Ben had the most beautiful dark eyes sheâd ever seen, but this morning there was something else there. He couldnât hide his fear.
She swallowed and let her gaze drift over his face. The lines of worry around his eyes caused her heart to prick. What was going through his mind?
âBen, what is it?â she asked. âWhatâs wrong?â
He opened his mouth as if to speak but instead pushed his chair back and jumped to his feet. He strode to the window where he stopped and stared outside. His hand raked through his hair. âYesterday was almost too much for me, Hannah. When I saw that guy aiming an arrow at your back, I thought I was going to be too late to help you. But then, the pictures of Faith...â He stopped, and a choking sound rumbled in his throat. He took a deep breath. âThey knocked me for a loop. I canât believe anybody could be low enough to threaten a child. If anything happened to you or Faith, I donât know what Iâd do. Youâre the two most important people in my life.â
She hesitated for a moment before she walked over to him and laid her hand on his arm. He flinched at her touch, and she tightened her hold on him. âBen, look at me.â When he didnât turn to face her, she squeezed harder. âBen, I said look at me.â
Slowly he turned. âHannah...â
She put a finger to his lips to quiet him before she spoke again. âI have to admit that the things that have happened the last few days have scared me. I donât want to be hurt, but I would give up my life to keep Faith from being harmed. Iâm so glad youâve been here with me. Youâve protected us and youâve encouraged me when I was afraid.
