The working-class neighbourhood of Testaccio was for many years synonymous with its slaughterhouse, or mattatoio. In recent years the area has become gentrified, and is best known for its clubs. For a taste of old Testaccio, head for one of the district’s many restaurants; this is the best place in town to sample traditional cucina povera – offal-heavy “poor cuisine”, best sampled at Checchino dal 1887. Testaccio’s historic market (Mon–Sat 6am–3pm) is now in bright new premises between Via Galvani and Via Alessandro Volta, and is a great place to pick up a picnic lunch. Near the old slaughterhouse at Piazza Giustiniani 4 is a branch of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome (MACRO Testaccio; Tues–Sun 2–8pm; €8.50; museomacro.org), home to innovative temporary exhibitions.
