Shape of articular surfaces

In some joints, flexibility is limited by the impingement or interlocking of the non-articular surfaces of the bones at the end of certain ranges of motion. For example, elbow extension is restricted by the interlocking of the olecranon process of the ulna with the olecranon fossa of the humerus (Figure 5.12A). Similarly, elbow flexion is restricted by the interlocking of the coronoid process of the ulna with the coronoid fossa of the humerus (see Figure 5.12B). Lateral and medial displacement of the radius and ulna relative to the humerus in the elbow joint is severely restricted by the interlocking of the articular surfaces (see Figure 5.12C).
