CHAPTER THIRTEEN
Candidate One
âWell, good to see that you have the household in order,â The Doctor mused as he followed Ira through the cell corridors. He looked over the different doors, each one with bars over small bulletproof windows. He could see the despondent prisoners or corpses through those tiny squares. âI see you have made a few additions. Did your husband have these many cells?â
Fuck, this bastard was chatty.
âI made a lot of enemies, Doctor.â She glanced back at him, before looking down at the cart his lab techs rolled for him. Her mouth twitched slightly, familiar vials coming into view. Two were empty, labeled with Tristanâs name, and date of birth. The third was filled with a thick liquid. It would seem clear to most, but each bump and roll caused the fluid to glisten with different colors. Yellow, reds, greens, purples, oranges, and blues mingled within the transparent mixture.
She had no name for the serum, or elixir, or whatever it was called and didnât care to name it.
What it did to the human body mattered.
The result would be a blessing.
Or a curse.
Either way, the human body changes, perhaps even to the DNA.
Tristan will never be the same.
She paused before the cell door. Her hand reached out to the sensor. Before it stopped, just before range for the scan.
Ira hesitated.
Her brow furrowed, remembering how easy it was for Old Man Dante to subject her and Ori to these same experiments. She, herself, had committed many atrocities, destroyed so many lives in her climb to dominance. Innocent or not, it did not matter.
Hell, even Tristan was not exempt from that, if his battered body and sullen spirit were anything to go by.
So what was one more little push down to Hell?
She knew there was her own particular prison down there waiting for her.
The Doctor looked towards Ira expectantly, before his head jerked to the side to see several drones hovering above them. He smirked slightly, closing his eyes and giving a slight wave. Before he commented on the little spies fluttering around them, a loud buzzer jumbled his thoughts, making him and the two lab techs next to him jump. He gripped the cart to steady himself and glanced up.
Ira decided, and his little fright amused her, a slight smirk on her face as the door opened fully. She held up her hand silently, before walking inside first. The grin faded into a small smile when her eyes laid upon the man who took her breath away. âTristan.â
Tristan opened his eyes, still facing the ceiling. He flinched, hearing the voice of the woman who tormented him, âWrath.â He released a dark hiss, sitting up and taking a deep, struggling breath. âWhat do you want?â
Iraâs small smile turned into a snarl at the tone in his voice before she calmed the flame. âRemember, my gift? Today is the day.â She grinned and stepped closer to him.
With each step she took closer, he tried to shift back. All the way as far back as possible.
