Leadership in a Culture War

A culture war will often surface in a small school as the result of a disgruntled teacher (or two or three) who chooses to leave your school, feeling forced to move to a new school, district, or community to continue teaching with traditional methods. Such teachers might feel threatened by the use of student learning data, or by the dynamics of being collaborative and sharing decision making around essential learning standards and building common outcome assessments, or they might disagree with the idea that students can retake assessments and get more than one chance at learning through the intervention system. These teachers might hope to elicit a reaction from school leadership and create a battle. Leaders should keep in mind that the mission, vision, values, and goals of a PLC represent the right work; there is no reason to engage in a personal battle or cast the teacher who is choosing to leave in a bad light. This teacher will often be a good fit in another district that is still moored in the belief that the teacher’s job is to teach, and some kids learn and some kids don’t. Allow teachers who are no longer a good fit for your school to leave with as much grace and dignity as possible. Do not try to catch them doing something wrong to punish them, or the like. Agree with a teacher when he or she says, “Maybe this isn’t a good fit for me anymore.” Don’t smooth it over, and don’t take cheap jabs. Let the process that is put into place work.
