CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Dressed in sweat pants and a heavy tee-shirt in deference to the morning chill, Sam took her coffee out on the deck. Margaret was already there with the Sunday paper strewn over the table. They hadn't talked since last night, and she tested the waters gingerly. "You have dibs on the comics?"
Margaret looked over. "They're all yours if you can find them."
Sam sorted through the mess of papers. As they sat, drinking their coffee and reading, it could have been like any other Sunday morning, except for the slight edge of tension she felt. Did Margaret feel it, too?
Finally when she couldn't stand it any more, Sam looked over. "Did something change between us last night?"
Margaret dropped the paper and gave her a puzzled look. "What are you talking about?"
"It felt like something shifted. But I'm not sure. Maybe I just misunderstood."
She paused and Margaret propped her elbow on the table, resting her cheek on her fist. Her intent gaze unnerved Sam slightly. She took a deep breath. "I felt like a child being reprimanded by her mother."
"I didn't mean it that way." Margaret shrugged. "Just thought the warning was worth repeating."
"I still can't believe our actions have to be weighed against someone else's perceptions. What an absurd--"
"Don't discount it just because it's not right." Margaret closed the section of the paper she'd been reading and opened another. "You may never figure out why Rhonda's on your case. But she is. And you've got to protect yourself. That means," here she paused and looked at Sam, "Don't. Give. The. Woman. Any. Ammunition."
A smile softened the words, and Sam considered them with a sigh. Somehow they made more sense removed from the flare of emotions.
Margaret glanced back at the paper. "Are we done yet?" she asked.
"Done?"
"You know. 'Resolved?'"
Sam smiled. "Sure." She stood and reached for her coffee cup. "You want some?"
Already engrossed in an article, Margaret pushed her cup over by way of an answer.
When Sam came back out and set the steaming coffee down, Margaret looked up. "Let's do something this afternoon."
"I thought we were." Sam sat down. "Remember the yard work?"
"Horseback riding would be more fun."
Sam dropped the funnies. "We could get maimed. Or killed."
"Pooh. Horses are safer than cars."
"How did you arrive at that interesting tidbit of information?"
"There's got to be a statistic somewhere that proves it." Margaret started pulling the papers into some semblance of order. "I bet more people are killed in traffic accidents than on horses."
Sam considered reminding her that more people drive cars than ride horses. A lot more people. But she decided against being so rash. Margaret would spare nothing to defend her bizarre sense of logic. "I was going to wait around for Frank to call."
"No. No. No." Margaret looked at her in mock horror. "One does not hang around and wait for some guy."
"What does one do?"
"Keep 'em guessing, honey. Always keep 'em guessing."
Sam laughed. "That sounds like a bad line from a bad movie."
"It probably is." Margaret grinned back. "But what do you say?"

Astride a placid dun mare, Sam was glad she'd agreed to the outing.
