HIGHER GROUND

Carter projected a holo image of the Sanitas estate from his comp-slate and angled his wrist so that everyone in the 4x4 could see it. Thanks to JACAB’s aerial reconnoitering, he now had a clear picture of the compound, which looked remarkably like a university campus on the inside, in stark contrast to its prison-like exterior. There were twenty buildings distributed across the leafy, landscaped estate, some of which were connected to one another in a G-shape. The vast slab-like warehouses containing the labs and production facilities sat off to the left of the main gate.

“The Superintendent’s office is in the Kwolek Building, at the far side of the campus,” Amaya said, pointing to the building on the map. It was a multi-story office block that wasn’t directly connected to any of the other structures. “According to the data that JACAB recovered, the office is on the top floor, dead center of the building at the front.”

Carter nodded. “I suppose the Superintendent chose it in order to have a grand view of her mini empire.”

“Going off what we know of her, that’s probably true,” Amaya replied. She then drew her finger through the image, causing the buildings she touched to shimmer like mirages, before pointing out the main gate at the front. “This is where we were denied entry earlier. It’s also where the wall surrounding the Sanitas compound is at its lowest.”

Carter manipulated the image to focus on the Kwolek Building. His first thought was to work their way around to the rear of the compound and enter as close to the target as possible, but as Amaya had just hinted, the far wall was twice as tall and twice as thick. Even with his abilities, scaling it would be a challenge.

The other problem was that the far wall bordered the outer perimeter that surrounded all the pharma campuses. There was a sentry tower positioned in line with the Sanitas compound, and while the guards on duty were primarily focused on watching for trouble outside the perimeter, they also had a clear view of anyone trying to sneak around the back of the compounds.

“The security is too tight to enter close to the Kwolek building,” Carter said, resetting the image to its previous state. “We need another way in. One that’s quick, but still avoids the guards.”

The group thought for a moment, but even with his mind racing at a million miles per hour, a plan wasn’t forthcoming.

“We could try to sneak down the side wall, here,” Amaya said, pointing to a copse that appeared to have grown naturally beyond the wall, unlike the precisely-engineered groups of trees inside the compound. “The wall is still comparatively thin there. Maybe we could break down the mortar with our swords and punch our way through?”

Carter considered the idea, but dismissed it. “I’m sure we could break through, but not quickly,” he replied. “The security officers patrolling Sanitas would have to be sleepwalking to not notice us bashing through the wall.”

Amaya nodded, taking the dismissal of her idea with good grace.
