FIGURE 9. “‘Utsukushii shima’ Taiwan o nozoku” (Peering into Taiwan, the “beautiful island”). The cover of a 1939 Tabi special issue placed an image of men of the Amis people over a map of the entire island of Taiwan. The image effectively erased the island’s majority Taiwanese Chinese population from the representation of Taiwan’s authentic culture. It likewise represented the dancing men as the authentic people of all Taiwan by describing them as “the Takasago people” rather than as Amis people.
