CHAPTER NINE

Day 4

The sun was barely up when Faye woke and found Brian and the others sitting outside at a collection of tables laden with coffee mugs, sauce bottles, and a huge plate of toast.

“Made you a coffee,” Brian said, pointing at a mug next to him.

“Oh?” Faye grinned. “That’s nice of you. Any particular reason? Any special reason?”

“I was up first. Whoever’s up first always makes the coffee.”

“Oh.”

“Full English breakfast in five minutes,” Olivia shouted from her RV.

“Smells delicious,” Brian boomed.

“What’s the occasion?” Faye asked, trying to sound casual.

“I haven’t cooked in days,” Olivia replied, “I was having withdrawal symptoms.”

“Oh. Well, before we eat, Brian, I have something for you.” She pulled up the bag she was carrying and took out a wrapped block of something.

“What’s this?” he asked, taking it from her.

“Open it and see.”

He pulled off the wrapping. It was the newest hardback book of his favourite author.

“There’s something inside it,” Faye said, and he opened it up to reveal a metallic bookmark with his name engraved in it. “It’s not real silver,” she said, “It’s plated, I think, silver plated.”

“Thanks very much,” he said. “You don’t normally wrap my books up, you generally just lob them at me as you come in from shopping.”

Faye’s smile faltered a little, but she carried on. “These,” she said, taking envelopes from the bag, “Are from our kids, our friends, and our family.”

“Oh?” said Brian. “Why are they sending us cards?”

“Brian!”

“What? It’s a perfectly reasonable question.”

The others sat at the table, pretending not to listen, except Olivia, who kept popping her head out the door as she cooked.

“You’ve forgotten, haven’t you,” said Faye.

“Forgotten what, lass?”

“It’s our twenty-fifth wedding anniversary today, Bri. Twenty-five years!”

“Is it?”

“Oh Brian!”

“Before you burst into tears,” he said, taking her hands in his, “I haven’t forgotten.”

“You have!”

Brian looked across at Mark. “Have I forgotten?”

“No, you didn’t forget, Bri.”

“Tel?”

“He’s mentioned it a few dozen times.”

“He has,” Sophie agreed.

“Definitely hasn’t forgotten,” Olivia shouted from inside.

“Really?”

“Aye. I have a surprise for you later.”

“Do you, Bri?”

“Yes, love.”

“Did you get me a card, too?”

“No,” said Brian, “I forgot the card, it’s in a drawer at home.”

“We got you one though,” Sophie said, pushing an envelope across the table. “Happy anniversary to you both.”

“A nicer couple there never was,” Tel said.

Mark plonked his card down on the table and raised his coffee mug. Olivia stood beaming in the doorway, wiping her hands on a towel, and said, “Congratulations! What do you get for twenty-five years anyway?”

“A medal,” said Brian, “And a letter from the King saying ‘bloody well done’.”

“Silver,” Faye said, glaring at her husband. “What’s the surprise?”

“I can’t tell you.”

“Is it nice?”

“I think you’ll like it.”

“It’s not a silk scarf that I’ll never wear, is it?”

“No, it’s better than that, much better.”

Faye turned to the others. “Do you know what it is?”

They all nodded, not daring to say anything else, just smiling.

Brian and Faye hugged. They all ahhed.

“Twenty-five years is quite an achievement,” said Tel, “I hope Sophie and I make it that far.
