put on your own oxygen mask first

My general rule of thumb is the more you give, the more you need to receive. If you’re not taking any energy in, when it’s time to give some to someone else, it isn’t there. In my Work/Life Balance workshops, the first exercise is the one on page 172. It’s designed to help you get a better handle on what gives you energy.

You know how flight attendants always remind you to put on your own oxygen mask first? Now, I think the reason they do is because it is so counterintuitive, especially if you have children, or someone else in your care. If you’re taking care of someone, the impulse is to take care of them first, right? But just as in a situation where you actually do need an oxygen mask, there is nothing you can do for someone else if you haven’t made sure that you are able to function.

With that in mind, try the exercise for yourself, either alone or with a partner. Then, when you’re done, admire the lists you created. Be grateful for them. Pat yourself on the back for doing it; you’ve done a good and revolutionary thing to decide that what makes you feel good is worth paying attention to.
