Nicholas made his way around the gardens and into the house. Clusters of guests were everywhere chattering about the weather and horseflesh and lateat on dit. He forced himself to move slowly and stopped to exchange niceties with several of the lords and ladies of whom he knew neither rank nor title.

Finally alone, he followed a long, dimly lit, corridor and heard the voices of several men. He paused.

“I cannot imagine coming to my end by hand of a savage pirate,” one said.

“Undignified,” another voice added.

“Fitzhugh was a good enough old chap…given to drink now and then, but who isn’t?” a third voice chimed in.

Fitzhugh. He knew that name. Guilt twisted sharply in his gut. He had been an innocent peer, simply at the wrong place during a terrible brawl…

Nicholas straightened his shoulders. It was done. He wished he might change what happened, but he could not. It was an event he most regretted, yet it happened, and it was by his hand. And he alone was to blame.

He moved further down the corridor searching for the object of his wrath.
