BRAX

Brax woke up alone. He hurried through his morning routine and wandered out of the suite, feeling anxious to find Piper before he could overthink things. The moment she was out of his sight, reason threatened to creep back in and put an end to everything. And Brax wasn’t ready for that to happen.

He found her sitting at a stool in the kitchen, sipping a mug of coffee with a thoughtful look on her face. Something about the morning light dancing in her hair made her look almost angelic.

All of the feelings came flooding back to the front of his mind, tugging at his heart and showing him pictures of a future with this girl beyond the scope of the Center’s offerings.

“Good morning,” Oberon said, before Brax could greet her.

“Good morning,” they both replied automatically.

Piper smiled at Brax over her coffee cup, and he felt his heart skip a beat.

“Today’s activity should be fun for you two,” Oberon said. “Why don’t you prepare some breakfast while I tell you all about it?”

“Sounds good,” Brax said.

Piper slipped off her stool.

“Sit, sit,” he said as he headed for the food programmer. “I’ll fix it this time.”

“The fridge is stocked,” she said with a big smile.

“You noticed,” Oberon said.

“Wow,” Brax said, gazing at the array of choices inside. “Eggs? Bacon? Fruit?”

“Yes,” Piper said.

“Okay,” he chuckled, grabbing the bowl of sliced fruit and setting it on the table.

He also took out eggs, cheese and bacon.

“Today, you’re going to the mountains,” Oberon explained as Brax cracked the eggs into a pan and started the bacon. “They’re snowy and scenic, and there’s a cozy chalet where you can drink hot chocolate after you finish your activity.”

He went on to describe the view and the layout of the house, probably trying to build anticipation. Though of course, he was leaving out the one obvious activity you did at a cozy chalet in the mountains.

Brax was becoming fond of the chatty AI, and his enjoyment of biological behaviors.

“So, what will we be doing there?” Piper asked at last, as Brax set their breakfast dishes in front of them.

“You’ll be visiting a ski slope,” Oberon said.

Piper choked on the bite of egg she had just taken and coughed a little.

“Are you okay?” Brax asked her.

“Fine,” she said, lifting her face to his. Her eyes were wide.

“You’ll be skiing or snowboarding - your choice,” Oberon went on.

Piper turned back to her meal without enthusiasm.

“Have you skied before, Piper?” Brax asked.

She shook her head.

“You’ll love it,” he assured her, trying not to smile at her obvious trepidation. He had been scared the first time, too.

“Appropriate clothing and gear will be waiting for you at the chalet,” Oberon told them. “And there is an instructor ready to help you, Piper.”

“Um, thanks,” she said.

“Be sure to eat your breakfast,” Oberon said. “You’ll need lots of energy on that mountain.”

Piper’s eyes went wide again, but she dug into her fruit.

Brax smiled and ate his meal as well. They would have fun today. He was sure of it.
