Sleepy considered how much this stay would cost him. Convicts had to pay court costs and fines, and, in some situations, the cost of guards. Legs dangled from the bunk above distracted him. Knowledge Allah slowly lowered himself to the ground, a spider easing itself down on an invisible strand, before steadying himself on his bad leg. He took a few tentative steps to test the strength in his leg before putting his full weight on it. Out of habit, he stretched out his hand for his cane, but it wasn’t there.
“Your knee bothering you?” Sleepy asked.
“The pain is a reminder.” Knowledge Allah’s face contorted with each step. Each morning was the same, the slow rise and the deliberate pacing pushing through the pain until most of the stiffness loosened up.
“You have a lot of reminders in your life.” Sleepy watched the routine with distant fascination.
“I never want to forget any lesson, no matter how hard it was learned.” Knowledge Allah kept his back to him, attempting to use the toilet with as much privacy the small cell allowed. “Otherwise the tricknology of supremacy will get your mind state upset and out of balance.”
They headed down to the cafeteria. They had barely settled into eating before a trustee stood at the end of their dining table. Sleepy scanned the room for any sign of his father. He couldn’t help a twinge of disappointment that his father had simply given up and disappeared when the conversation became difficult. “You two have a visitor.”
Sleepy glanced up from his plate of what he presumed were scrambled eggs. The head count had them awake and out of their cell by four a.m. and he was far from adjusted to their new schedule. He’d read once that the Marion County Lockup facility had been sued by its inmates a few years back. That in and of itself was newsworthy since so many prisoners had to combine their earnings to purchase a court date over the matter. They claimed the living conditions violated their civil rights. In the end, they prevailed. The facility hired a new food service vendor and even contracted with a healthcare provider. Sleepy couldn’t imagine what the food must’ve been like before the lawsuit.
“What visitor?” Knowledge Allah said.
“Someone who requested you. Since you two share the same case …”
Knowledge Allah wiped his mouth. “Let’s go.”
The trustee led them out of the cafeteria to the visitor’s reception area. A large, open room with several tables in it. On the far side of the room, small rooms partitioned off by glass doors were available. Inside one was a tall man with deep sepia skin. Black tinted glasses hid his eyes. A black pinstriped suit jacket draped to his knees. A blood red bow tie clung to his neck. The man looked vaguely familiar, though Sleepy couldn’t place him.
“Who’s he? Your barrister?” Sleepy whispered.
“Something like that.” Knowledge Allah grasped the man’s outstretched hand before turning to introduce his friend. “Sleepy, this is Majestic Jamal, Minister of Propaganda for the Lost Nation.
