Mark took his time walking back to the flyer, also thinking. He threw an additional small chit at the youthful guard and began his flight back to their starship.

In some ways, Anwyn reminded him of his younger self before he met Veraz and joined the team. She was incredibly stubborn and headstrong but far more innocent than he had been. He had lived a much tougher life than Anwyn’s privileged upbringing as a member of a prominent Mythri family. That life had helped shape the man he was now, but he had been shaped equally by the team’s acceptance and friendship.

He wasn’t sorry he had given her that “safe” kiss, although he half wished he had been far less cautious. There was a job to do, and complications with Anwyn would have to wait until later. Going undercover, he didn’t expect to see her again for a while. Maybe he’d have more time to sort out his feelings for her when this job ended. Then he glided the flyer into the starship bay and headed back to the team to make plans for the next few days.
