Chapter Sixteen
When they arrived at the Stateroom, Micah helped Lily out of the truck. He liked the style of her dress—a conservative, boxy thing that should have made her look shapeless.
It failed spectacularly.
Sheri walked across the parking lot toward them, cell phone at her ear. Pulling away the mouthpiece, she called out, “Stephanie and Eddie are stuck in traffic. They’re gridlocked because of a pileup on 93.” She ended the conversation. “Everyone’s being rerouted, so they’re going to get some dinner somewhere and head back. But we can still have fun, right?”
Lily’s step hitched and Micah turned to see her blink at Sheri in surprise. “Eddie’s not coming tonight?”
Sheri shook her head. “It’s a complete mess on 93, guys, so don’t head home that way.” She tucked the phone in her purse then walked toward the Stateroom. “Okay, let’s go!”
Lily froze. She glanced around the parking lot as though stymied. Then her face cleared and her whole body relaxed. Maybe she’d finally realized dancing was supposed to be fun.
Micah’s spirits lifted. Compared to last week, they were off to a better start. He intended to do what he could to keep it that way. He wouldn’t let her out of his sight tonight, that’s for sure, and he would make an extra effort to be patient. When he’d arrived to find her not ready—again—he had to do a couple breathing exercises. If he had any hope of winning her over, even a little, patience would be a good start. She seemed less defensive now, so maybe it worked.
They headed inside and he spent the next hour helping Lily learn new techniques. Toward the end of the session, the instructor with gray hair and wiry eyebrows that quivered over his jutting brow walked over and observed them dancing. When Lily started to step forward instead of back, Micah gave her a nudge in the right direction.
“It’s so helpful to have a gentleman who’s such a strong lead, isn’t it?” asked the instructor. “You’re very fortunate.”
When her face fell at the hidden meaning, Micah saw his odds of moving beyond the basic four- or six-step shrinking. He wanted to pound the guy but settled for a glare before turning to Lily. “You ready to get something to drink?”
“Sounds good.” Her face relaxed into a smile.
They worked their way out of the dance hall and into the pub.
Lily caught his arm. “Oh, I almost forgot. I want to get a couple pictures of Sheri and Holt while they’re dancing. I’ll meet you back here in a few, okay?”
“You brought a camera tonight?”
“I’m hoping this will do.” She drew a small camera from her purse. “Grab us some drinks, and I’ll be right back. Iced tea for me.”
Last week’s episode with the creep streaked through Micah’s head. As Lily moved to leave, he reached out and caught her free hand. “If you’re not back in four minutes, I’m coming to find you.” He gave her fingers a squeeze, the spontaneous gesture feeling as natural as his next heartbeat.
