I CURRENTLY LIVE IN NEW YORK CITY WITH MY IMMEDIATE FAMILY, AND the rest of my family lives in California. The decision to move to the Big Apple was largely based on my love of the city, my passion for the arts, and my desire to be in the center of all the action. But part of it was also definitely seeking out my own space to carve out my path. I needed to have breathing room to focus on my husband and sons and raise our little family the way I want to, outside the scrutiny of a one-industry area like Silicon Valley. I finally have a chance to become the star of my own life story, or life theatrical show. The best part is that my family accepts, supports, and understands that need.
Family has always been a strong part of my identity. I guess when there are four siblings, you always have company, someone to play with, so I never really needed that many friends. Family was always at the core of my social life. But what if it hadn’t been? Who would I be then?
When I was pregnant with my second son, I got a bit crazy. Sometimes I’m shocked that my husband still picked Family in his own Pick Three as often as he did during that time. If I were him, I would have run! There I was, crying at the diner over too-runny eggs. Screaming at his gifts of ice cream or flowers, “Do I look like a dog you just throw treats at!?” Bawling at Kodak commercials. Pregnancy is not for the thin-skinned—male or female. The weight gain, the hormone changes, the money flying out the window. I completely understand why some women just don’t want to deal with it at all.
When Your Family Is Far Away
More than ever before, families are geographically spread out. It’s way too easy to get caught up in our busy lives and fall into the trap of out of sight, out of mind. Here are some ways to make family a priority in your Pick Three, even if they are far away.
A PRIVATE FACEBOOK GROUP. My husband and I have our own private group on Facebook where we share photos and memories. When our sons are old enough to be on social media, we’ll let them join, too. That way, no matter where we are in the world, or how busy our days get, we make sure to take time for shared memories.
GROUP TEXT. Sharing your everyday, casual thoughts with your family members keeps everyone updated on one another’s lives in an easy, low-touch way.
MONTHLY FAMILY BOOK CLUB. How about getting family members together over video chat once a month to all share thoughts on a book, article, or news story? Having something neutral to talk about can also relieve any weird family drama or dynamics.
SET CALENDAR REMINDERS. If you find yourself going too long without reaching out to your family, use your calendar to remind you. Schedule regular times to connect with family members.
